The study of mental health in our country has been around for over 100 years. The definition of mental health in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM) has changed in all five of the editions. In the 1st edition: reflected a psychodynamic approach and the disorders were classified on the basis of presumed causes otherwise, known as organic brain dysfunction or socio-environmental stressors (1952). In the 2nd edition, it focuses on description and a precise categorization, eliminating the prior focus in the 1st edition (1968). In the 3rd edition of the DSM, it rejected the psychodynamic, due to the scientifically based medical model (1980) and lastly, the 5th edition reflects categorization of DSM III; hardly ever mentioning the causes. Mental health can also be defined as our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and how we think, feel, and act. Also, it helps us understand how we handle stress, relate to others, as well as, the choices we make. Mental health difficulties can be found in every race, ethnic group, socio-economic class, religious background, nationality, ability, gender, and also in people of different sexual orientations. Mental health can affect a person at every stage of life, from childhood to adolescence and through adulthood. Some of the causal factors for mental health issues are biological, life experiences or family history.

There are cultures that treat these individuals like the reincarnations of gods. On the other side, there are cultures that isolate these individuals and look for cures to these pathologies. Mental health illnesses are important because they have to be studied to understand their cause, whether it may be biological or environmental. These issues are important because like every type of illness they have to be delicately studied, focusing on treatments to either cure them or reduce the symptoms of the pathology. These people were either conflicted with the ideals of society or they were praised by it. Cultures, which didn’t accept them, closed them up into asylums. Patients inside these facilities were brutally used as guinea pigs for their experiments. The way these people were treated shows how cruel and ignorant people were to the unknown. By learning from histories mistakes we can move forward in improving our society and achieve greatness.
In my opinion, mental illness is also called psychiatric disorder, which affects an individual’s way of thinking, behaving and perceiving, and interacting with other people. Upon reflection, I felt that my anxiety was largely due to my negative preconceptions about mental illness especially my belief that mentally ill people are violent, unpredictable, and dangerous. These views were not only a result of a lack of knowledge about mental illness but also due to the impact of negative media and cultural stereotypes that I had grown up with. Before clinical placement, I used to be scared with the patients and used to be reluctant to deal with them.

In this Literature review we will use the terms older adults, elderly, baby boomer when referring to people ages 65 and older. “The rate of suicide in those aged 65 years and over has been increasing over the past three decades in most industrialized countries, with marked increases in both attempted suicides and death by suicide in the late 1980s” (Deuter, 2016). Older adults in the United States and many countries around the world die by suicide at elevated rates compared with younger adults (Conwell, and Van Orden, 2016). In addition to the age different, suicide seem to affect man and women differently with the baby boomer population. Men die more from suicide compare to women, even though females suicide attempt rate is higher (Heisel, 2006). Deuter reports that, in 2013, 7215 people aged 65 years and over died by suicide the USA, which accounts for 17.5% of the national total of suicide deaths (2016). The elevation of suicide in the elder is not only limited to the United States. According to Conwell (2013), the number of adults 65 year and older who died in the US is 6000 and 20,000 died worldwide, in 2010. The elderly population have become increasing prone to committing suicide and considered to be a population at risk. We will focus on the cause, challenges/controversy, and solutions that were used to address the issue of
