One subculture within the United States is that of the US Army. The Army defends the nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It is an exclusive group since not everyone in the country serves in the Army. The US Army’s official birthday is June 14, 1775, however its origins are much earlier than that. During British colonialism, citizens often had to take up arms to defend themselves, primarily against the Indians, since the British did not have a significant military presence in America. “Two concepts that still shape the American military can be traced to this period. The first is the idea of the citizen soldier, who picks up his gun in wartime and returns to civilian pursuits in peace. The second is the concept of universal …show more content…
It was not until the military success of the 1991 Gulf War did America visibly regain its pride in the Army. Rather than protests when soldiers returned, there were celebrations and victory parades. For the next ten years, the Army experienced an increased use overseas. These missions generally consisted of peacekeeping and nation rebuilding efforts in which it generally enjoyed success, with the exception of the last days of humanitarian efforts in Somalia. In 2001, many aspects of life in America changed forever with the terrorist attacks of September 11. Congress declared the War on Terror, and troops deployed to Afghanistan to eliminate terrorist bases there and attempt to capture Osama bin Laden who claimed responsibility for the attacks. In 2003, forces attacked Iraq to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein who was viewed as a major military threat and safeguard of terrorists. In stark contrast to the emotions exhibited during the conflict in Vietnam, Americans have shown widespread support of the military during the past thirteen years of military action. This support for American troops was widespread, even if people disagreed with the war for political or other reasons. America has consistently showed its appreciation for the individual Army soldier since 2001. Citizens widely support charitable organizations that formed to
The America I believe in, has a military that has fought for our freedom. Our military has fought for years to ensure our safety. Without the military we would be under the rule of an enemy country. The military is especially brave, and we can barely convey they are afraid. Like David Hackworth said, “Bravery is being the only one who knows you’re afraid.” We must be as brave as they are, and give them support. According to the web site army.mil, the military does what they ensure for us, since they acquire honor, integrity, respect, and courage. My uncle, Henry, is a retired veteran, and he has been through war. He stands a highly respected person in the military. I asked him when I was younger why did he join the military. Confidently, he
The history of the United States military is a very prestige, brave, heroic, and memorable one at that. Starting on September 3, 1793 the United States was officially it’s own nation and it’s own military. At that time many other countries didn’t believe that we would succeed but, now we are one of the strongest, freest, and most prestige country to possible ever be developed.
The Army has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on 14 June 1775 to meet the demands of the American

The U.S. military was sent to Afghanistan to get rid of the Taliban regime who helped the terrorists involved in 9/11. (History.com Staff, “President Bush Announces”). The Army began its linage on June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army in order to combine the 13 American colonies and fight the British forces (). From then on out the United States Army has seen multiple wars from the War of 1812 to present wars today, and will continue to be one the many forces to protect the USA. Now over the years, the United States Army has had to shift the way it conducts its soldiers to fight in the wars and how to be proficient in battle; even with the new warfare tactics that our enemies are developing daily.
For the vast majority of our nation’s history, the United States has had an all volunteer military. During our nations over two hundred and thirty seven years, only about thirty five, most of which in the 20th century, was conscription or a “draft” was in effect. The United States, up until the Civil War, rarely kept nor desired a standing Army. Relying on individual state militia’s,
Their are many continuities with respect to how the United States constructs its military between 1776 to 2015. The military was and still is an appealing option for poor Americans. As written by Howard Zinn in A People’s History of The United States, “In fact, the military became a place of promise for the poor, who might rise in rank, acquire some money, change their social status.” This was true

The disconnection with the military starts with the disconnection with America’s politicians. Before a politicians is elected they want to give you a great sales pitch in order for you to vote for them. They sale you dreams and hope and once you vote for them, they get into office or their political seat, everything that some of them say ends up going away. Now that they are placed were they want to be, some of those future plans that they told you they were going to do is gone. It’s all a hustle, it’s a part of the campaign process and it leads people right back in the same situation they were in before and after the person they voted for is gone.
There are many things that contribute to the US Army’s status as a profession. The US Army relies heavily on patriotism and positive public opinion to maintain its status as a profession. The US Army currently sustains its enlistment levels solely through volunteers from the general population. Throughout history the draft has been initiated very rarely in order to augment the ranks. Congress approves the funding and benefits that make the US Army a viable profession for those US citizens who volunteer to serve. Without adequate financial support, many soldiers could not afford to volunteer to serve. The public must trust that military and congressional leaders will utilize the Army, comprised of the sons and daughters who volunteered to serve, in moral and ethical ways and for purposes that support only the best interests of the United States. If Army soldiers and their leaders’ acts in reprehensible ways that destroy the trust and confidence the public places in this profession, the status of the Army stands at risk of declining.
In the two hundred years since 1775, there has been thirty-five years of fighting in what we consider major conflicts or wars. This averages out to about one year of war to every almost 6 years of our existence as a nation and during that time, we have not been without formal military organizations. Over the course of history, the United States has engaged in many battles that were a crucial phase in developing who and what we have become. Throughout this assessment, we will analyze what were some of the true tipping points that shaped (1) America’s paradoxical love-hate relationship with war and, (2) How this relationship influences American warfare.
After the 9/11 terror attacks, the Bush Administration launched the war on terrorism in attempts to deal with the threats of global terrorism and enhance homeland security. This was characterized by a successful American military campaign to destroy Afghanistan's Taliban regime and interrupt the operations of the Al Qaeda terrorist network. In the aftermath of this successful mission, the United States military invaded Iraq due to its probable source of strategic surprise and the huge danger to U.S. national interests. The onset of the invasion was marked with huge debates regarding the continued use of international sanctions and the inspections by United Nation's arms to contain Iraq. The American military forces mainly targeted the Republican Guard and its armor, especially in attempts to advance into Baghdad. Through the use of airpower and ground troops, military successfully destroyed of the Republican Guard. However, the destruction of the Republican Guard proved to be costly mistake since it permitted foreign terrorists to enter Iraq and prolonged the war to nearly 9 years. Consequently, American ended up fighting a counter insurgency war in Iraq instead of regular military conflict. Despite of America's capture of Baghdad in the early stages of the war, the battle prolonged for 9 years because of the entrance of foreign terrorists and emergence of counter insurgency war.
After the attacks on 9/11 people realised there was a reason to fight and that they couldn't be afraid. In 2005 almost seven thousand people enrolled in the U.S. Army. Also the number of people that were recruited in the Navy boosted from less than twenty thousand to nearly thirty eight thousand. Although the enrollment
