How Ecommerce Begun and What Made it So Successful In basic terms, it was the opining up of the internet for commercial use in the early 90s that made it possible for individuals to utilize the said internet in the conduction of business transactions. It should however be noted that before this, there was what is referred to as EDI-based ecommerce. Defined as "a kind of teleportation method to transmit business documents from one computer to another," EDI was largely being utilized by large business enterprises back in the 80s (Qin, 2009, p.5). The 90s ushered in a new era of internet-based ecommerce. Internet-based ecommerce as I have pointed out elsewhere in this text was made possible by the opining up of the internet for commercial use. More recently, ecommerce has evolved to e-concept based ecommerce (Qin, 2009, p.5). A number of factors have contributed to the success of ecommerce. To begin with, unlike traditional buying and selling of goods and services, ecommerce brings an enhanced level of convenience. For this reason, customers have identified that they no longer need to travel long distances in the search for products they could easily find online while still in the comfort of their respective homes. As Kroenke (2013) observes, organizations like Amazon.com are even making it easier for customers to make informed buying decisions by amongst other things providing a platform for them to provide product reviews.
