Flow with the SF yoga and dance culture San Francisco has a thriving yoga community with plenty of opportunities for travelers looking to flow. Yoga to the People is a completely donation based studio in Mission District, one of my favorite locations in San Francisco. The studio has a community feel with one large room that can accommodate nearly fifty students. On the fifth floor, the large windows have a fantastic view of the city and during class students can watch flocks of birds soaring by. With classes all day from 7am to 9pm this studio accommodates all types of schedules. There are even candlelit classes on weekend nights. The classes focus on each individual student connecting to their own breath. The instructors will run the class through a sequence and then prompt the students to repeat the sequence flowing with their own breath. This studio also has yoga mats available for rent and water for purchase. If you are looking for a more intimate practice, head to Yoga Garden SF. The entrance of the studio is thriving with plants and flowers, giving truth to the name Yoga Garden. With several small rooms for practice there are multiple classes going on at a time. The rooms are cozy and naturally accented. The studio even has real wood blocks for modifications. The studio is versatile offering prenatal yoga, acro yoga and everything in between. While in town, I took the Vinyasa Align class with Phillippe whose
The 1960’s presented Hippies with the chance to express their beliefs and attitudes in a number of diverse
The hippie movements of the sixties were driven by a plethora of factors. There were many new technologies that were being introduced in this period, a war against Communism around the globe, internal struggles against several types of injustices, a growing drug culture, and several other important developments. To say the least, it was a volatile period in American history and many sub-cultures were actively seeking to carve out new paths that were starkly different than the traditional norms. These generations who rejected traditional culture helped carve out a new trajectory for the United States and the movements influences can still be felt to this day.
The 1960s Hippie movement was a major point in the American history. In the 1960s a certain class of young people associated their lifestyles with the ideas of freedom, peace, and love. Hippies acted against white upper middle class lifestyle because they thought it was based on the wrong ideology. Hippies were against consumerism and American suburban life of the late 1950s and early 1960s was embodied in itself the idea of consumerism. Hippies, on the other hand, felt better about communal life with equal distribution of social goods. Traditional “bigger share” and consumerist greed as concepts of American society were despised by Hippies.
In this paper, I want to share the history of Haight Ashbury, and its transition from a small town with nice Victorian homes, to its deterioration in the 1960’s. The importance of a farm in Woodstock, to the Cultural Revolution and how it all spread from there including the role of radio and television in spreading the news of the hippie movement and how an attempt to free culture from its moral ideals and standards only led it with no standards or moral compass, and all they were left with was thought to be an idea of the Summer of Love.
The late 1960’s and early 1970’s was a time of intense political change and shifting worldviews, especially in the Bay Area. Particularly, the summer of 1967, nicknamed the “Summer of Love,” had widespread political impacts, even though that was not the intention for some participants. With the emergence of LSD and new optimistic, loving mindsets, hippie culture shaped peoples actions in regards to prominent issues in the years following, such as the Vietnam War and the War on Drugs. This paper will explore how the Grateful Dead influenced and adapted ideas from this time period. Despite the band’s self-proclaimed apolitical stance, the Grateful Dead inadvertently influenced the proliferation of LSD, the War on Drugs, and drug use in conjunction
This movement focused on refusing to participate in society as another everyday person. Those who participated in the movement were known as hippies. The name derived from the organization they had formed, the Youth International Party (Yippie Movement)(1967) and the back-to-land movement (1960s-1970s). This movement was associated with the anti-war cause, music, psychedelic drugs, and mysticism, casual sex, and communal living. Significant events associated with hippies are the Summer of Love (1967) and the Woodstock Music and Art Fair (1969). The Summer of Love was centered in San Francisco and focused on promoting alternative lifestyles. Hippies were repulsed by the average American lifestyles; they rejected the Americas “sick notion of work, success, reward, and
San Francisco has always been a world leader for the psychedelic community due to none other than the infamous Haight-Ashbury. It was the breeding ground for hippies, home to some of the best music of all time and, well known for it’s “groovy vibes.” After a quick stop by Fisherman’s Wharf and a few twists down Lombard Street, we arrived at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury. As we walk we see multiple groups of hippies passing spliffs and playing music, the bright neon signs with the words “Smoke Shop” at every overhang, the classic Ben and Jerry’s where Jerry Garcia found his love for what would eventually be the signature “Cherry Garcia.” All of
Woodstock has been portrayed by the media to be the most important and influential festival of the sixties, however that may not be the case. The Monterey Pop Festival is one of the pre-Woodstock festivals that had the same or more effect on the culture of the 1960s. The Monterey Pop festival took place directly in the center of the counter culture seen during the movements’ most important year, 1967. The summer of 1967 is the most important year of the hippie movement because it gave the movement nationwide awareness. It may have also led to the demise of the Cultural Revolution. The best example of the summer of love was where it originated at the corners of Haight and Ashbury Street in the bay area of San Francisco, California. This would be the location of the year’s most important rock festival (Perone 1). The narcotics LSD and Marijuana were the fuel for the Bay Area music scene. The drugs were at the height of their use in 1967 influencing the various psychedelic acts that were then becoming nationwide hits. Some of the area bands that would soon gain importance in the music world were The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Steve Miller Band, and Santana. In the striving music and cultural scene America’s first
The mid-1970s was a time when some people still identified as hippies. In the small college town where I lived then I was reading a book in the “alternative” cafe, when a self-styled hippy sat down at my table. Sharing tables was quite common for that cafe, which espoused a more Marxist, communal way of doing things.
The Rock-n-Roll movement in the nineteen fifties planted the seeds of the Hippie Movement, but Kennedy’s assassination, and the Vietnam War really is what sparked this social change in America.
1967 was a year focused around counterculture as a revolutionary new movement captured the nation’s attention. This phenomenon, whose members were called hippies, originated with America’s youth, though it quickly spread to other nations. Hippies advocated personal freedom and expression and hoped to create a society full of peace, harmony, and love. As hippies challenged traditional societal values in an attempt to find inner peace, many members began to experiment with a variety of mediums, including illegal drugs, such a marijuana and LSD; bold fashion, such as tie-dyed shirts, long hair, and love beads; and sexual freedom. Following a philosophy of “do your own thing”, many hippies also rejected conventional home life and chose to live
The “hippies” of the 1960s had many effects on the American society. The visual appearance and lifestyle of the hippies were in sharp contrast to the conservative nature of the older generation, which defined them as a counterculture. The hippie lifestyle was based on free love, rock music, shared property, and drug experimentation. They introduced a new perspective on drugs, freedom of expression, appearance, music, attitudes toward work, and held a much more liberal political view than mainstream society.

The 1960s was a decade of political and social upheaval. The counterculture, which was what the decade was called, became disappointed with all the restrictions and conventions of the straight society. The Summer of Love did not occur until 1967, but the decade was inspired by the Bohemian spirit which was already present in the 1950s; known as the Beat generation. The counterculture gained significant influence in liberal cities such as Berkley and San Francisco. In 1967, Scott McKenzie released his song San Francisco and with this song came rumors of a huge love-in in the summer. This is what fueled the Summer of Love. Leaders of the counterculture in the Haight-Ashbury district were anxious to start planning an
