After reading “The Supplement Sleuth: Some dietary supplements are spiked with drugs" by Jennifer Couzin-Frankel, I realized that now you may never know what could be hidden in the products that you use every day. After reading this article, I have found that taking dietary supplements are the worst thing for you to take to lose weight, gain muscle, or even just to maintain a healthy diet. The concerns about ephedra, sparked at me and intrigued me to learn more. It has been stated that after millions of people have been taking ephedra, millions of people have died from taking this dietary supplement. After Cohen started seeing people developing weird symptoms, he then started a study to only realize that it was all cause by weight loss pills
In 2007, the Mylan pharmaceutical company purchased the rights to the EpiPen. The drug inside the EpiPen is Epinephrine, which is a synthetic adrenaline that is used to treat possible anaphylaxis shock caused by allergies. “Evidence-based guidelines recommend the prompt administration of epinephrine as first-line treatment for an anaphylactic episode” (Dinakar, 2012). Millions depend on carrying the drug to live a normal life. Currently the EpiPen has no
Enemies are committed every day. Victims wonder if the crimes will or can be solved. It told the many different ways forensic evidence is used. In the passage “Forensic Science: Evidence, Clues, and Investigation” by Andrea Campbell, Forensic evidence was used to help with many types of situations, but jury cases are what they use this type of evidence in the most. In the passage, they stated what Forensic Evidence was.
In Couzin-Frankel’s article “The Supplement Sleuth”, she talks about a man named Pieter Cohen who is trying to expose the hazards of supplements. She explains that the FDA is too limited on what they can and cannot do with supplements. They even say that the FDA says “show us the bodies” before the FDA will look at it. Our system is not the most efficient when it comes to drugs of any sorts. We need a better control over what is let into our shopping-marts, and labeling to improve our intake of medications.
The DSHEA of 1994 was enacted by the U.S. Congress that was concerned the importance of the dietary supplements for the health in the public. The need for consumers to have quality supplements with accurate product information, the controversy over the Food And Drug Administration's (FDA) regulatory approach to dietary supplements. President Clinton, signing the legislation into law on October 25, 1994, said: “After several years of intense efforts, manufacturers, experts in nutrition, and legislators, acting in a conscientious alliance with consumers at the grassroots level, have moved successfully to bring common sense to the treatment of dietary supplements under regulation and law.”
This summary is based off of the film called Body Detectives in which the show focuses on the decomposition of bodies and how it can be used to find out the time of death of a victim. One particular case examined in this show was the case of a police officer’s sister whose body was found at the bottom of a cliff. The initial autopsy conducted by the coroner found that there were no injuries consistent with a fall from a height as high as the cliff. . By the time anyone saw the victim’s body, a month had already gone by. Her family refused to believe that her death was a suicide, so they exhumed her body and took it to the body farm to be examined for a second time.
Issues have recently started developing around the drug since just a few years after it was put onto the market. Hundreds of people have died from taking the drug for the
The Food and Drug Administration is a regulation agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. It’s role in our nation is to be responsible for “protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation” ("What We Do."). One of the most important responsibilities and the topic I will be discussing throughout this paper is drug regulation. The Food and Drug Administration approves drugs that are intended for use in diagnosis, cure, relief, treatment, or prevention of disease, and is intended to affect the function of the body. In order to do so, The Food and Drug Administration reviews drug manufacturer’s via application to put drugs on the market; therefore, a drug may not be sold or marketed unless it has and remains approved by the FDA. Even though a drug has been approved does not mean it will remain on the market, drugs have the likelihood to be recalled. For example, when you see those late night personal injury lawyer commercials saying, “If you have been prescribed and taken said drug, and experienced any of these side effects such as blood clots, seizures, etc., you may be entitled to compensation.” those drugs have usually been recalled due to adverse effects
In the 1990’s, phentermine was marketed in combination with fenfluramine as Fen-Phen. The combination therapy was subsequently well documented to lead to valve abnormalities resulting in aortic valve replacements, as well as pulmonary hypertension, in patients younger than expected. This led to its ultimate removal from the market in 1997. 1-3 However, phentermine alone was deemed safe and continued to be sold as a weight loss aid, either on its own or in combination with, other medications.4 There are no known reports of ischemia induced by phentermine alone or other associated weight loss agents. Particular consideration should be given to patients who present for surgery and anesthesia who have previously been prescribed phentermine. We describe a case of phentermine-induced myocardial infarction in a young female who was previously healthy.
Also, the FDA has found 300 products that are frauds. These products are usually in dietary supplements, sexual enhancement supplements, and bodybuilding products. These products contained unapproved stimulants (Starling 1). Michael Levy, the FDA’s director in its Division of New Drugs and Labeling Compliance said, “These products are masquerading as dietary supplements- they may look like dietary supplements but they are not legal dietary supplements” (Starling 1). Most adverse reports consist of liver damage, strokes, heart attacks, kidney failures, and death. “The Federal Food and Drug Administration noted that it had, 'worked with industry' to to recall
MXE is a drug made legal by the standards of the American government as well as those from around the world. The food and administration makes this drug as an unscheduled drug in the United States. This drug is highly toxic and holds extreme danger amongst humans. People tend to think that because this is a legal drug it is safe to consume. The problem is that they could be dead wrong. There are many hidden dangers to this drug. Even our medical world is not yet sure of the lasting effects that can become of this new designer drug. The lack of traditional testing means that the toxicity data is very scarce and was never more apparent during our recent trip to the local emergency room, our son was tested for drugs and none where to be found in his system. There are many doctors still unaware about this drug, thank god our son knew what he had taken which we could then relay this information to the hospital, do to its close relationship to the drug Ketamine the doctors were then able to treat our son, and it was then we discovered that he suffered a slight heart attack while taking the drug called MXE. It has been discovered the recreational use of this drug has hospitalized many people as documented
Don’t hear my voice, road will tell where I am going, by breaking the darkness.
The popular supplement ingredient, 1,3 dimethylamine (DMAA) was linked to several fatalities and as a result was put on a medical hold in 2012 by the Food and Drug Administration. The ingredient was later banned for use in any supplement. In March of 2012, two Army soldiers died during a workout in which both had reportedly taken supplements that had DMAA in it.1
Just for a second think of a murder scene. There is a 9 year old girl, dead, with just a shirt on, rope imprints around her neck, bruises all over her body, and she's abandoned in an open lot 20 miles from her home town. How does that make you feel? If you were hurt, disgusted, disturbed, or even filled with rage, then you would understand why my dream career is to be a detective.
The health and fitness industry is plagued with products that promise you to help you lose weight fast. Many are designed to be fat blockers, while other products are appetite suppressants, fat burners, calorie burners, or metabolism boosters. They all come with a recommendation of following an exercise and healthy diet program, to help you achieve the desired weight. Many of these products are made from herbal extracts and natural compounds. A word of caution is to always consult a doctor before starting any weight loss and exercise program or including any natural supplements in your diet, especially if you are taking medications or are under any treatments. Just because a product is natural does not necessarily mean that
Everyday, thousands and thousands of animals are being hunted, caged and killed for the purpose of animal testing. This is a very controversial topic regarding the life of many innocent animals. There are some people who believe that using these animals for testing is wrong. On the other hand, there are just much people believe that there are many benefits for using animal for experimentation. I myself think that people are the most important animal on this planet. Therefore, using animal for testing to protect our livelihood is the top priority.
