Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Thomas, Justice Alito, and Justice Kennedy concurred and Justice Ginsburg, Justice Sotomayor, Justice Breyer and Justice Kagan dissent with the majority opinion. II. Lanell Williams-Yulee stood as a candidate for County Court Judge in Hillsborough County, Florida. On September 4th, 2009 Williams-Yulee drafted and signed a mass mail fundraising letter announcing her candidacy and asking contributions to her campaign. A complaint was filed by the respondent against Williams-Yulee in the Supreme Court of Florida claiming that this was a violation of Canon 7C (1) of the Florida Code of Judicial Code. In her letter Williams-Yulee announced her candidacy and in the letter she wrote, “[a]n early contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250, or $500, made payable to ‘Lanell Williams-Yulee Campaign for County Judge’, will help raise the initial funds needed to launch the campaign and get our message out to the public.” Lanell Williams-Yulee concluded her letter with her signature. It was recommended that Williams-Yulee was to receive a public reprimand as well as to pay for the costs of the proceeding. These recommendations were approved
