The Sweet Hereafter Comparison The unique novel and film The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks is a written by a man who knows how people feel and think as well as how they act once they face a personal tragedy. In 1997 an accident took place involving a bus driver who was driving the kids to school. Throughout the book and the movie a lawyer goes to each family and convinces them that it was no accident. Mitchell Stephens is the lawyer and what he does is comes to the town where everyone consider each other like family and tells them to go against one another so he can get to the bottom and give the town answers. The book was published in 1991 by Atom Egoyan and Russell Banks however the movie was published in 1997 by Atom Egoyan. The authors …show more content…
Throughout the story in both the novel and movie Mitchell had the same personality and same mindset. “Its anger. What the hell, I’m not ashamed of it. It’s who I am. I’m not proud of it, either, but it makes me feel useful” (Banks, 89). Mitchell was not only angry in the novel but he was also angry in the film. At the ending of the film Mitchell shows his anger when Nichole blames the accident on Dolores. He got angry at the fact that Nichole blamed Dolores because he knew she was innocent. (Egoyan, 1997). However, when going from a novel and then watching the film you will notice minor differences. In the movie the author decided to include Dolores point of view which made her seem kinder and more loved by the town rather when in the film they quickly judged her. “No. Nobody wants to sue Dolores. She’s one of us” (Banks, 219). In the film when Nichole is being interviewed she blames Dolores that she was going over the speed limit when Dolores was not. In the film the skip over Dolores point of view and the only time she is heard is when she is being questioned (Egoyan, 1997). If the producer of the film chose to keep in Dolores point of view then the movie would explain the characters a lot more. With Dolores point of view she could have been seen to be not guilty as well Mitchell anger would have been explained more when Dolores was found guilty. Overall, the characters in the novel and film share the same personality but their opinion are described more in the
“That our feet may swiftly carry out thy command so we shall flow the river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be”. Forbidden to be repeated by anyone who is not a McManus, Connor and Murphy allow the family prayer to roll off their tongues, and journey into the ears of the monstrous souls they are about to exterminate. Their religious belief nourishes the idea that they can make the streets of Boston good. The Boondock Saints is a movie about religion, family, and vigilante justice.
After watching the movie “Where the Spirit Lives”, I have had some strong feelings towards what was done to the First Nations People of Canada. At the beginning of the movie, it showcased the job of the Indian Agent, a man whose job was to interact with the tribes of the aboriginals in hopes of taking their children to the brutal residential schools. In this scene, the agent was trying to act friendly and tried to make a good impression on the aboriginal children. After watching this scene, I was angry because the Indian Agent made the children think that they were going somewhere nice and that they were going to be treated well. In reality, it was quite the opposite.

Pleasantville is a movie where significant change occurs based on the theories of social change. In the movie, the TV show Pleasantville is set in the 1950’s and everything and everyone in that show is in black and white. And being that they’re set in the 1950’s the have the same outdated morals, values and beliefs that are associated with 1950’s culture. However, the town of Pleasantville slowly but surely turns into colour when they go against their societal norms and beliefs and have sex, read, paint, express emotions and many other things. Pleasantville portrays a town that is ready and is in need of social change and how social changes are required for humanity to progress. One could say that the colour changes in Pleasantville are viewed as a bad thing because it would mean that you broke a societal value or norm in Pleasantville where everything is always perfect. However, David and Jennifer prove to the locals that the colour change is anything but bad and how it allows them to express every facet of their minds and not be stuck in the same roles and routines day in and day out. These sociological, anthropological and psychological changes are needed when trying to move forward as a society and Jennifer and David have helped Pleasantville expand their horizons.
Something the Lord Made is a coming of age film produced in the United States that premiered 30 May 2004 of a medical docudrama that depicts the relationship between two heart surgery pioneers, Alfred Blalock, a noted surgeon and Vivien Thomas, a nineteen-year-old carpenter’s apprentice, destined to become a laboratory technician. Produced and directed by Joseph Sargent, the film is based on the experiences which occurred during a 34-year partnership between Dr. Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas, (Mos Def) the assistant hired to perform janitorial work and clean the dog kennels. During the evolution of their relationship, Blalock developed a great deal of respect for his assistant’s work in the lab, while refusing to acknowledge Thomas’ contributions in the development of the new surgical procedures they created. Although he was not recognized by Dr. Blalock or Johns Hopkins, Thomas continued his work with Blalock, exhibiting initially, his skills as a servant, and later, as a servant leader. In an example of true altruism, Vivian Thomas, whose character I have chosen to critique, shows integrity, empathy, and forgiveness, character traits outlined by Dr. John H. Horsman’s in Servant –Leadership & Moral Intelligence, (0215, P. 11).
Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World delivered a misogynic message according to several critics because of the characters and plot that was presented. In this film, the female characters were portrayed in a way where they were only deemed as prizes, Ramona Flowers, being the main one. Women were being mistreated by the male characters in the film, and were fought over violently by previous lovers throughout the entirety of the film.
The movie ‘Her’ is the story about Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice. RENAISSANCE! This was a period in time in which change was huge, many incredible people rose up and many incredible things were created. The renaissance started out as a small movement in Italy, it then worked its way up to be one of the biggest turning points for man. The renaissance brought forth many new artist, art styles, beliefs, and cultures. A famous oil painting known as The Last Judgment was a famous triptych, a painting with three separate panels. It was painted by Hieronymus Bosch, a famous renaissance painter with no equal, after 1482. Hieronymus Bosch’s painting, The Last Judgment represents some aspects of the renaissance. Bosch’s painting represents the art styles of the renaissance and embodies humanism to a certain degree, but it shows humans being judged by God and this is against the renaissance’s belief of the church.

The characters of this movie had to face death in ways that were both typical and atypical to soldiers of the Civil War. In this movie the 54th regiment has, in some cases been surrounded by death, like Sargent John Rawlins was as a grave digger. These men volunteered to join the regiment and fought to be placed on the front lines. They understood that they would likely die in battle. The also faced the fact that they could be killed for their race or their support of an African American infantry. The men of the 54th infantry were willing to enlist and face the dangers of war because they felt the cause they were fighting for was worthwhile enough to die for. (Fields & Zwick, 1989).
Movies like 'Inception' and theories like Hedonism often support the proverb "Ignorance is Bliss", while movies like "The Matrix" and thought experiments like "The Experience Machine" often give reasons about why that is not true. In this essay I will come to a conclusion based on my beliefs by outlining a few of the arguments in each side. I will also give examples of times when ignorance truly is bliss.
The thought of placing flowers on Allie’s stomach at the cemetery disgust Holden, his disgust echoes his own fears of the inevitable end. Holden is a clear atheist and does not believe in the existence of the soul after death. Just as Allie is gone forever, Holden is threated by the idea of disappearing himself with no one to remember him. Holden contemplates the nature of cemeteries with only a tombstone to make the existence of a person. The inability to escape the constant exposure to the elements and in addition to being surrounded by other dead bodies depresses Holden to think that is what awaits
The film Pleasantville shows the changes in American society over the past 50 years by placing two teenagers into the Pleasantville show, which was from the 50’s. The movie depicts how there is no longer the “American Dream” and no longer a perfect way of life and the changes the world has made. The world that the teenagers come from is filled with sex, drugs, money, and is very different from the way the world was in which the Pleasantville Show took place in. Morals and values have changed in the people and in society that the teenagers came from and shows it would be impossible to return back to the kind of life style the world had in the 50’s.
