The Masque of The Red Death” is a very confusing story. The moral of the story is that people cannot escape death. There are a lot of symbols in the story. Such as the colors of the seven chambers. The colors can mean many different things that symbol the story. The he seven colors are blue, the second chamber was purple, the third was green throughout the chamber, and the fourth was furnished and lighted with orange, the fifth with white, and the sixth with violet. The seventh chamber was black. The colors I will be talking about are blue, red, and black.
The color blue is the color of the sky and see. The color in general is frequently associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes wisdom, faith, trust, confidence, loyalty, intelligence, wisdom, and heaven. Blue is considered good for the mind and body. Blue is a kind of a chill and calming effect. The blue room, which is furthest to the east, represents birth. The color suggests the "unknown" from which a human being comes into the world. Blue is used in the world today to symbolize different things in this world

In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Masque of the Red Death”, one of the main themes is escaping death. In order to enhance this theme, the author used the archetype, Red. For example, the author states “The Red Death had long devastated the country… Blood was its Avatar and its seal - the redness and the horror of blood… The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim” (Poe 1).
When you think of the color red, you may automatically think of the ideas of death, emotion, or love. James Hurst uses the symbolic color of red help us visualize the story and bring it to life. For example, the narrator describes Doodle during the storm saying, “He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red.” Hurst using the words bleeding and red give us a better visual to what is happening in the story. He as well does this when the narrator says, “ I began to weep, and the tear blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar.” This line shows Brother’s emotions, how angry he was and remorseful. Other instances where the author uses red is with Doodle’s mahogany casket, the bleeding tree, and the Ibis’
In "Masque of the Red Death", there are several differently colored rooms, which at first glance are simply several disparate pigments. After looking at the story as a whole, it is clear that these specific room colors each mean something other than itself. Spoken in "Masque of the Red Death" about two of the seven rooms is, "That at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue...The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black..." (Masque 5). The author, between discussing these opposing rooms, mentions the other rooms and their colors, also. Each of these rooms symbolizes the seven stages of life. The blue room represents birth and new life, as it is at the east where the sun rises beginning each new day. Meanwhile, the black room is the farthest west where the sun sets, ending the day. This black room embodies death, which is uncoincidentally where everyone dies in "Masque of the Red
“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are best shadowly and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?” (Poe). There is no such thing as having the ability to predict or tame the wrath of death, for all we can do is learn to accept it. In the story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, the main character, Prospero, shows through his arrogant actions that death will forever overpower the human instinct to stay alive. Poe uses symbolism to convey the battle between man and nature through the idea of the masquerade that serves as a fortress against the wrath of the disease, an excuse to disguise the true colors of man, and the honest truth that man will never become immortal.
What does color mean; is it merely light bouncing off objects, or does it hold some deeper purpose? Well, in ‘Red Badge of Courage’ it most certainly does, this book presents a variety of colors that possess more meaning than simply their namesake. A few colors that can claim this attribute include; blue, gray and red/crimson. Blue is a color that represents the sky and the sea. In “Red Badge of Courage” the color represents a few other things than the sky, it also represents the Union army.
Joseph Rosenblum agrees with the most widely known interpretation of the colors of the rooms. In an essay about the symbolism in “The Masque of the Red Death,” he writes about the meaning behind the colors of the rooms. “blue is the dawning of life. Purple represents
In Prince Prospero’s castle, he had a hallway of seven rooms. The rooms went from one direction to another, starting in the east, changing by color as they went. Poe mentioned, “That at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue- and vividly blue were its windows” (84). The symbol of the rooms one and seven represents new life and death. With this, Poe shows how the room started in the eastern extremity, just as the sun rises from the east, and is blue just as blue symbolizes life. Poe also writes, “The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung down the walls” (84). In this quote, he shows how the last room was black, which symbolizes death. This last room was in the far western extremity. This shows that this was the last room, and everything must end there. Consequently, many people did not notice the two different colors in the room. The first color of that room was black, which was death. The other color was red which can symbolize blood. Also, the colors of these rooms showed how the death could not be kept out. Above all, these colors the stages of life. Therefore, the colors of the rooms showed what was
The theme of death being inevitable is first developed through the seven colored chambers by using symbolism. Poe describes the process of the disease, emphasizing the redness and blackness throughout the story. After setting the tone, Poe shows the desperation of the people attempting to escape death by hiding in Prospero’s enclosed fortress. The seven chambers that Prince Prospero presents in his isolated fortress move “from east to west—from blue to black—the seven stages of man” (Poe 374). The usage of the colors that is illustrated within each of the chambers creates a mysterious mood of transformation that is developed in the connection of life. Poe hints that death will come through these progressions of the rooms. Each room corresponds to the different stages of a human’s life. The blue colored room symbolizes the rising sun from the east as well as the beginning of a person’s life. The purple room suggests the beginnings of growth. The green colored room suggests the youth of
“The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe is an eerie short story about the “Red Death”, Poe’s twist on the Black Plague. This plague swept across an unknown kingdom killing many people as it went. There were sharp pain, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. Poe had two main themes for readers to think about. These themes were proven through five main symbols: The ebony clock in the black room, Prince Prospero in the abbey with his friends, the colors of the seven rooms in the abbey, the format of the hallway and rooms and, Prince Prospero running after death through all the rooms.
The color red is used in literature as well as throughout The Book Thief to display war, blood, and anger (Morton). Early in the novel, Death associates red with war, “The last time I saw her was red… Then bombs” (Zusak 12), Death uses the
