If Robin Hood was an outlaw who did not obey the law, then why was he viewed as a heroic character? The answer was that he stood for the common man. He was a people’s hero and a champion of the poor. Anthony Pollard reveals Robin Hood’s reasoning for robbing the rich and giving to the poor is his book Imagining Robin Hood. He explains that “He does not rob the rich to give to the poor. He robs from the undeserving and helps the deserving” (4). Robin Hood is considered a fictional character but the impact his legends had on our society is very real, and will influence generations form many years to come.
THE REAL ROBIN HOOD When dealing with the fictional character of Robin Hood, it is easy to get lost in the fantasy of his tale because of the additions to the story through oral tradition over the years. However, there was a real- life Robin Hood who was much different than what twentieth century cinemas portrayed him as being. The real Robin Hood was born at Locksley in the county of Nottingham during the reign of Henry II. It may be confusing to many people to hear that he was a yeoman, nothing more, nothing less. The ideal supremacy from his legends depicts him as being a knight in shining armor, but the history from his ballads tells otherwise. Although no scholar has ever proved his existence, the setting in which most of his exploits took place was very real.. His
The first reason are that the defend the weak and helpless, Robin Hood and his Merry men protect them from the bad guys. For example, When the men got caught for shooting king’s deer, Robin Hood came in protected him and said that he shot the deer. This is important because if Robin Hood wouldn't've come and save the men, he could’ve got killed because the consequence for shooting the king’s deer is death. This shows that Robin Hood took the blame and helped defend the weak. Another example, when Robin Hood was showing Maid Marian around, he showed her the homeless shelter that Robin Hood and his Merry men had provided. This is important because the homeless could’ve starve to death or die from sickness, but Robin Hood give them a shelter and food to eat. This shows that Robin Hood and his Merry men save a lot of poor and help them survive. Robin Hood and his Merry men are like knights of the round table because they defend the weak and helpless.
The only remaining seal of Wallace was attached to the Lubeck Letter. William spent much of his younger life in Selkirk forest, outlawed, wrongly accused of being a poacher. He was a gamekeeper, equipped with a bow and arrow. Here is the reason for the bow on his seal. Is it purely coincidence that Robin was famous for his use of the bow? William’s wife was called Mirren; this is Scots for Marion, the name of Robin Hood’s love. No evidence suggests that Robin ever lived in Sherwood. There was no actual ‘Robin Hood’ but is it possible that he could have existed as William Wallace. Robin was famous for stopping tax carriages and giving the money to the poor. Robin did not do this by force; he used tactics and strategy. Much like William Wallace did in his battles. William lead commoners to battle not trained soldiers. He used strategy to win his battles, yet another connection between Robin and William. All evidence suggests that Robin lived in the 13th century. It is of little surprise then that this was the time of William
Also, speaking of the robin, in the movie he doesn’t make a big appearance. Yes he is there, but in the book he is made out to be almost a main character, and a close companion to Mary. Yes it is said that he does become a friend of Mary, but after that you don’t see much of him. Not until spring that is. I really wish they had used more of him in the movie.
Productivity is Essential Robin Hood is a cartoon figure in America that steals from the rich and gives to the poor. A good idea, right? Well, how about if the rich work for everything that they have and the poor rely on the rich and do not do anything to earn their keep? Robin Hood just became a very evil man. Atlas Shrugged written by Ayn Rand in 1957 expresses ideas that are becoming more and more true in today’s lazy society.
In the 16th century, Robin Hood was known as a noble person who was deprived of his land. This made Robin Hood known as more of a real aristocrat because of this way of him being known. Is it said that Robin Hood may have been a Yorkshireman called the Robin of Loxley. He is said to have lived during the 11th and 12th centuries and is described as a knight. He is known for wearing green and for his great skills with a bow and arrow. Robin Hood hid from his enemies in the Major Oak Tree in Sherwood
Even though Robin Hood is not known to be inspired by anybody, he shares a myriad of similar characteristics of any common ruffian but he has one very unique quality that most ruffian’s don’t have. Robin Hood can be described as a criminal but the difference between a criminal and Robin Hood is that Robin Hood gives his gainings to the poor while most criminals keep it for themselves. Many consider Robin Hood as a rebel who would do anything to give his gains to the poor even if he had to kill to do so.(Robin Hood) Others may characterize him as a noble outlaw who fights the oppressive power that rules over him by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. The earliest appearances of Robin are at odds with the romantic notion, as Robin
The legend of Robin Hood is a controversial story of a “hero” who robbed from the rich and gave it to the poor, glorifying criminal behavior. This English folktale is about a heroic outlaw who would steal from the rich and give to the poor. Robin Hood was a skilled archer and swordsman who is traditionally depicted in green clothing. Robin Hood is seen as both a hero and a criminal, based on one’s opinion. He robbed from the rich friars and abbots for something bigger than them just taking land and making money. He robbed them to feed the homeless and the poor.
198-9)” In Nagy’s explanation Robin Hood’s life as an outcast from society is truly seen, which is important because it explains why he does not abide by the laws that society dictates around him. The forest through this lense is the free and open world where individuals who chose not to live the expected life resorted to and made a society of their own. In examining the forest through this context, it is clear to see that the actuality of the forest is that it is a no man’s
Forty-five million Americans live under the poverty line which means that a present day Robin Hood could potentially help almost fifteen percent of the entire population (Gongloff). To those people he has helped, he is a hero, but to those he took from, he is a criminal. Throughout all of the praise and criticism, he continued to make the right choices and provide for the citizens of his town. Although Robin Hood is first mentioned in William Langston’s poem “Piers the Plowman” in 1377, his character changes over time according to the period in history. Therefore, Robin Hood, the young and highly skilled archer who was created in the European area, is the most influential character in today’s society because he has heroic qualities and he
Throughout Robin’s existence in 14th-century England, where agrarian discontent had begun to chip away at the feudal system, he appears as a rebel who murders government agents and wealthy landowners, later variations from times of the less social, Robin Hood an aristocrat with a heart of gold and his love Maid Marian. We can never know for sure whether he even existed other than the ballads and books. What we do know is that the notion of a brave rebel who lives on the outskirts of society, fighting injustice with his companions from centuries-old pub to the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood, who put himself outside the law, had become a popular hero. King Henry II and his abuse of law lead to the legend of Robin Hood. A good archetype of Robin Hood is Iron Monkey.
This change was completely unnecessary for the movie. Robin Hood is a character that at some point must face violence just like the rest of his “Merry Men” so you can expect for things like killing, some drinking (alcohol), and of course smoking. The original Robin Hood stories were full of violence and non kid friendly things. This change in the prince of thieves movie is like “Disneyfication”. “The Prince Of Thieves” movie is supposed to be the closest we have to the original stories of Robin Hood but if we keep altering him like this then the main character will not be the same and could mess the story up
Most people have heard about Robin Hood, and perhaps know his motto of, “Steal from the rich and give to the poor,” but many don’t know how Robin Hood came to be, or where his merry men came from. Robin Hood discusses the origin of the famed outlaw, as well as all of his adventures with the sheriff and other greedy fellows. From his outlaw beginning, we see his band work together to defeat the tricky sheriff of Nottingham, money hogging monks, and other bad guys, all while staying true to their idea of helping people who need it. Robin gains a following of men, such as Little John, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck, and more. The costumes, contests, and continuous adventures tell the tale of the men in green and their lives. Despite danger, Robin Hood
Robin Hood and his band of Merrymen have become accustomed to stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. As the campaign against the Sheriff of Nottingham intensified, the old system of operations were no longer viable. In the early stage of the campaign, the band of men were cohesive. Since the group’s increase in size, the men had become fragmented and no longer focused in their common grievances. This was a cause for concern. Robin realized that Sheriff Nottingham and his men, in comparison were better organized and stronger. In order to run a successful campaign, the group of Merrymen would need to be restructured
What is Robin Hood’s current mission? Robin’s mission is to successfully revolt against the Sheriff and his administration. He and his Merrymen rob from the rich to pay the poor. Revenge is its mission.
In my opinion, on the one hand, it meant that the poor was oppressed severely by the rich, and rebelled at full steam against the rich by being an outlaw hero. In other words, the outlaw heroes embodied the spirit of liberty, and stood in the mind of the populace for justice. Similarly, Robin Hood, who was an outlaw hero, did a favour for the doleful knight by lending four hundred pounds to him, and punished gravely the callous Abbot.
