The Tech Retail Association is a professional organization at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Membership to the organization is exclusive to students either majoring or minoring in Retail Management. While membership is open to both males and females, the group is largely comprised of college-aged (18 to 23 years of age) females. The Retail Management program’s faculty is also included in the membership. The group’s purpose is stated as being to “prepare individuals who will make a contribution to the retail industry and to society as a whole through quality education, research, and service” (“TRA”, n.d.). Meetings are held approximately once a month. Each meeting aims to address different topics pertaining to the retail industry. Examples of meeting topics include professionalism, industry innovation, entrepreneurship, interviewing tips, and community service. Each year, the organization strives to bring in a speaker who is… and has experienced retail industry. In searching for a speaker, the group looks for someone whom the students will find to be both relatable and inspiring. The reason for this being that the majority of the members of this organization are at a highly impressionable age. By hearing success stories from industry pioneers, they will hopefully be encouraged to pursue their life’s ambitions. The speaker whom the group has chosen for their event is Sara Blakely whom is represented by Speakers.com.. Ms. Blakely is the creator and founder of SPANX.
“We believed from the start that if we brought the customer quality merchandise at the right price and offered excellent service, we could change retailing in the United States. Today, we are the model of what retailing should be.” – Bernie Marcus

Prior to my participation in the Kroger Delta Division Summer Internship Program I had very little knowledge of the grocery store or retail business environment and all of the moving parts that are necessary to produce a successful company. In addition, I had very little applicable work experience due to being a student- athlete competing in a year round sport. Participating in this internship allowed me to get an up close look at what the retail business entails and how to execute company, division, and department goals and sales plans to over 100 divisional stores and ensure that all of the store employees understand the scope of the business. By completing this internship, I now have a greater understanding and appreciation for the retail environment and can more effectively apply the knowledge I have gained in my undergraduate studies to a real work environment and my graduate level studies.
During the past decade, retail markets have undergone many changes in their processes, services, and formats. The last part of distribution of the market strategy, retailing serves as a bridge between the final consumer and the mass producers of products. Retailing has reached every corner of the globe, and Wal-Mart has been eying areas where the
“Retail is the business of selling goods made by others to individual consumers. It is a huge industry, dominated by Wal-Mart, which touches every corner of the globe. Due to the decline in the global economy, the future of many retailers is uncertain as consumers begin to spend less. The retail industry is the last step in the process of getting products to customers efficiently, and should not be confused with the wholesale activities which precede it. The difference between the two is that wholesalers are companies that sell their products to businesses, whereas in retail, the goods are sold
Macy’s is a company that is embedded in our national pass times and has become more than just a retailing store. Its long history of retailing is over 150 years old. It was founded in 1843 by Rowland Hussey Macy in Harverhill, Massachusetts and was not originally a retailing store. Originally, Rowland targeted the mill industry and it employees and opened four dry good stores. Unfortunately early success did not come for Macy as the company’s first stores actually all failed. Luckily, Mr. Macy was a resilient man who learned from his early mistakes and realized that his target market for this type of store was not mill employees but a higher end clientele. He opened his new store “R.H. MACY” on Sixth Ave between 13th and 14th Street with the trademark star flying high. Mr. Macy had used his tattoo that he had on his arm when he worked in Nantucket on a whaling ship, the Emily Morgan. This was a success for Mr. Macy and as his company grew so did his tactics and innovation on bringing in new customers. He was the first to implement theme exhibits in his stories as well as illuminating window displays which was new tactics in the late 1900’s. He was also the first store to use publicity devices to bring in new customers and since they did not have modern communication he used “Santa Claus” as a public figure to draw in customers. Unfortunately Mr. Macy would not see the 20th century and passed away.

The primary business model of Nordstrom has always been to provide exceptional service, selection, quality, and value. Nordstrom’s exceptional customer service comes primarily as a result of two main components. First, their attention to detail when it comes to customer experience and secondly, the level to which they empower their employees (Khan, 2014). These two factors together create a perfect customer service model that continues to generate stories that turn into legends (Khan, 2014). Rethinking “business as usual” allowed Nordstrom to break away from other department stores (Khan, 2014). For the most part, Nordstrom has
Over the past ten years, Walmart has been losing retail market share and their customers to competitors that can offer more reasonable prices at greater convenience for their customers. Walmart is losing money to Amazon and other online shoppings sites (D’Onfro). These competitors can offer the same or better price for a better quality item. Amazon can guarantee free, two day shipping if the package meets their requirements (Order with Free Shipping). To collect real data for the inspiration for our idea we sent out a survey to every teacher and many students in the district. Me and Cole had a total of 122 respondents, a majority of them were between the ages of forty one to fifty and were female. In one of the survey’s questions, several respondents wrote that they regarded Costco as a more superior and desirable retailer for a more potential shopping option. Respondent sixteen replied that the changes that must be made to Walmart for them to regularly shop there were “A higher quality in their goods while keeping the low prices, obviously that will be a hard thing to do but Costco manages to do it. In a sum up be more like your rival Costco. The marketing strategy of costco is simple, sell goods in bulk for the lowest possible prices. This can be a strong competitive edge for these retailer because their customers feel they are saving money and time, by buying more than what they need in a given amount of time.
