The Texas Flooding

In the end of May and beginning of June, much of Texas was devastated and under water, caused by and intense thunderstorms. “Predictability relates to the ability to determine when and whether the disaster event will occur” (Nies & McEwen. p. 561. 2015). The weather forecasters where able to predict the massive amount of rainfall that was headed toward this area, but unfortunely the rate at which the rail fell was unpredicted. The flooding happened within minutes in most areas and left motorists stranded. As Chase states in the local Gainesville newspaper the Register, “Heavy rains throughout Cooke County on Thursday left many motorists stranded during the mid-morning torrent that hit the area” (para 1. 2015). “The scope of a disaster …show more content…

In such horrendous events the American Red Cross volunteers from all areas of the country, even the local volunteers are able to help, in this area more than 70 disaster workers came to help, which consisted mainly of volunteers. Shelters where provided for those families and individuals that lost their homes due to the moving water damage, or flooding of the homes. Make shift shelters were provided in local schools. In the American Red Cross shelters provided their standard set up with cots and offered hot meals, and provide other trained support services such as, health and mental health volunteers to help members of the community get back on their feet. (Red Cross Staff. 2015). Hundreds of people lost their homes due to the high winds and flooding. The American Red Cross hands out comfort kits to those who are in need. The comfort kits include items such as toothbrushes, shampoo, and deodorant. Some relief items are also included to help with cleaning up homes and neighbors, these items include tarps, trash bags, rakes and shovels. (Red Cross Staff. 2015). As the emergency response vehicles circulated the affected areas assess damages and helping with recoveries these comfort or relief kits were being handed out. “Primary prevention actions during this stage include notification of the appropriate officials, warning of the population, and advising what response to take” (Nies & McEwen. p. 561. 2015). There was not much primary prevention that took place, as there is no way to determine how much rain will fall and how fast it will fall. The local as well as the national weather channels and meteorologists forecasted and broadcasted severe thunderstorms for the area, but severity was unknown. “Secondary prevention strategies are implemented once the disaster occurs” (Nies & McEwen. p. 561. 2015). Once the local officials realized how sever this storm was becoming they urged those who were not out on the roads to stay in doors. For those who were driving on the roads was told to seek shelter and get off the roads as soon as they could. News officials also reported, “Roadways were shut down due to high water in many places including FM 678, FM 2383, FM 2896, FM 2071, and FM 371” (Chase para. 6. 2015). “Tertiary prevention focuses on recovery of the community, that is, restoring the community to its previous level of functioning and it’s residents to their maximum level of functioning ” (Nies & McEwen. p. 561. 2015).
