The history of Texas A&M University, the first public institution of higher education in Texas. The Texas A&M University was first approved by the United States Congress on July 2, 1862. This act provided for donation of public land to the states for the purpose of funding higher education whose “leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and mechanic arts." The State of Texas agreed to create a college under the terms of the morrill act in November 1866, but actual formation didn’t come until the establishment of the Agricultural and mechanical College of Texas by the state legislature on April 17, 1871. Alice Magaw was born November 9, 1860, in Cashocton, Ohio. Besides her contribution to nursing, little is known about Alice’s personal life and what inspired her to enter the field on nursing. However, one can guess that she saw a demand for nurses and had a passion for caring for others. During this time period, nursing schools were incorporated into hospitals. Alice Magaw attended the Women’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago from 1887 to1889, around the time that nursing began to transform from a lower class occupation to a respectable profession. A nationwide shortage of physicians in the mid-1960s gave way to the development of the nation’s first master’s degree curriculum in Nurse Practitioner at the University of Colorado’s School of Nursing in 1965 (Egenes & Burgess, 2001). The nurse practitioner movement was greatly influenced by the social movements of the 1960s and 70s, including the women’s and civil rights movements. By the 1970s, nurse practitioner preparation increased in graduate programs nationwide and the provision of primary care by nurse practitioners became widely accepted. Women of various racial and ethnic groups were finally allowed entry into nursing education programs after the Nurse Training Acts of 1975 and 1980. The physician shortages of the 1970s became a surplus in the 1980s, and Nurse Practitioners and APNs felt the need to increase scientific rigor to establish their continued value as PCPs (Frellick, 2011). In 1993, The American College of Nurse Practitioners was formed to further lobby and advocate for the needs of Nurse Practitioners (Egenes & Burgess, 2001).

The University of Texas - Pan American has been in operation since 1927, when it opened its doors with an inaugural class of just 20 students. Over the next 90 years, the university grew to become the tenth-largest public institution in the state of Texas, hosting more than 20,000 students who study fields like biology, business, and computer science at the school 's Edinburg campus. The tremendous growth of this institution has seen it transition from the smallest public school in the state to one of its major research institutions. It is also one of a handful of schools to serve students at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, rounding out a full commitment to higher education among its Rio Grande communities. Though the school has already grown by leaps and bounds, it 's not quite finished as of yet. In late 2015, the school will merge with the University of Texas at Brownsville. This merger will significant increase the number of Pan American students as well as add a top-ranked medical school to the mix.

The majority of the meting was focused on the care transitions program presentation and discussion. The presenters lay out was familiar as it was a community nursing care plan that included identifying, assessing, diagnosing, implementing, and evaluating the project she presented. The other members had a lot of questions about the process and a lot of time was spent on the social determinants of health. The presentation relied heavily on the in home part of the process and a nurse present on the board or for the presentation would have helped to connect the story for these patients in both settings.
