“Being honest never hurts anyone, being a liar hurts you.” Honesty is the first step to saving other people from being hurt physically and psychologically. Throughout the story the main character, Sandy, reveals that she is a constant liar during the story and gets herself in a lot of danger. Dishonesty created a near death experience for Sandy, as she fell into the pool at Allison’s party which was outside the knowledge of her mom, due to Sandy lying to her mom she was in major concern when her mom met her in the hospital. Honesty is the best policy is the theme revealed in the story “Pool Party” written by an unknown author through the use of characters, setting, and plot elements. To begin with, the theme can be seen within the characters.

In discussions on the topic of lying, a controversial issue has been whether there is justification of lying or not. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of if there is ever a time when a lie can be told for the good of someone else. Whereas some are convinced that lies should never be told, others agree that there are certain instances where lying is acceptable because the liar protects the one lied to. In the essay “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson, she explores the types of lies and how they affect everyday people. In Anton Chekhov’s fictional story, “The Lady with the Dog,” he displays two characters, Dmitri Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna, lying for love and to avoid consequence by their spouses. I stand against lying for the benefit of oneself because I think that it has the ability to ruin relationships or friendships and is hard to keep up the lies which leads to creating more lies. Although some people think that there are circumstances that warrant lying, I claim that no one should lie because lies end up hurting both people involved: the liar and the person lied to.

Mark Twain states in his essay on the Decay of the Art of Lying that “No fact is more firmly established than that lying is a necessity of our circumstances” The characters in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof often deny their circumstances and outright lie to one and another about their personal lives. However, these lies are spoken out of necessity, at the expense of social ranking and past remembrance. Tennessee Williams communicates to readers that verbal abuse and inabilities to tell the truth create unclear communication which breaks down relationships.
Lying has deadly effects on both the individual who lies and those around them. This concept is demonstrated in The Great Gatsby. Although Gatsby, Tom and Myrtle have different motives for being deceitful, they all lie in order to fulfill their desires and personal needs. Myrtle’s desire to be wealthy is illustrated when she first meets Tom, dressed in his expensive clothing, as her attitude changes when she puts on the luxurious dress and when she encourages Tom to buy her a dog. Tom’s deception is clear when he hides his affair with Myrtle by placing Myrtle in a different train, withholding the truth from Mr. Wilson of the affair and convincing Myrtle and Catherine that he will one day marry Myrtle. Gatsby tries to convince himself and
“Vertigo (1958)” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” Comparison Edgar Allan Poe was a famous poet in the late 1800’s who had created many famous works in his lifetime, that have gone on to inspire many horror artists throughout the ages. Artists such as Edouard Manet, Arthur Rackham, Aubrey Beardsley and more famous horror artists such as Stephen King and Alfred Hitchcock. Stephen King has created many movies in the horror genre, “Maximum Overdrive” “The Shining” and “Cujo”, and Alfred Hitchcock has had his fair share of movies as well, “The Birds,” “Psycho” and “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” Of course there are many more movies created by these artists, but the one that stands out in particular is Hitchcock’s “Vertigo (1958).” In comparison to Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “Vertigo (1958)” is the same tale, but modernized for the public.
The narrator states that maybe there would be a pool in the next town. There was a pool, but with the turn of events, maybe the fact was not so fortunate. First of all the pool was closed, but because her children were so hot and tired of sitting in the car the narrator begged the lifeguard to allow her children to swim. After the lifeguard consented, she dressed her children in swimming suits and then went to find a drink for herself. When she felt a mother's intuition for her children she ran back to the pool and at first did not see her youngest daughter. Her daughter had fallen into the deep end of the pool. Although the little girl did not drown, the mother was still shaken.
It is very true that we lie. We lie everyday conscious or unconsciously, anywhere and to anyone. It has become a way of life to many people, when one lies it feels completely normal, actually they don’t feel anything at all. One can be couth lying in any place like work, home and to different person’s friends, family, clients, teachers and even authority. In the preface of the story the author had describe how in a day she had lied a minimum of four times to various people. In spite of this the authors tried a different approach she tried now to go a week without consciously lying, she discovered that it is merely impossible and of course as various negative consequences. So the main topic here could be why do we lie? Thus to know the reason why we like we must first examine the ways we lie, the so commonly ways we lie daily fashion. And to these there are several ways to lie, let’s examine two: The so called “White Lies” and of course the common stereotypes and Clichés.
Ever since birth, people are told about lying and how it is something bad. Lying is projected as something that only can hurt people. Instead the slogan “Honesty is the best policy” is ingrained in their heads so that they are raised up to become honest people. Except not all lying is bad. Mark Twain shows this in his Adventures of Huckleberry Finn where Huck and many others lie throughout the whole novel. In the case of Huck, lying is what saves him and frees him from his grim situations. So lying itself is not that bad if it can save someone's life. This controversy over a good lie and a bad lie connect to the binary of appearances vs reality. As society’s appearance to the outside world is simply a lie to hide the horrors of slavery that
In today’s American society, lying has become something that we are accustomed to using almost every day without even realizing it. In “The Ways We Lie”, Stephanie Ericsson, screenwriter, advertising copywriter, and writer, elaborates on the act of lying and how it is used by everyone on a daily basis. She comes up with a list of the common, different kinds of lies that we all have told. Furthermore, the text goes in depth about the significance of lying and how it is an essential part of every human’s life. Ericsson’s essay effectively conveys this idea through the use of pathos, logos, ethos, personal examples, rhetorical questions, and analogies which helps the reader better understand the reasoning behind lies and how it affects our
As the story opens, already the reader is confronted with the topic of concealing the truth. The narrator speaks
Let’s say that, we always hear lies everywhere. Lies can hurt other people, and lies can be a joke to have fun with everyone. Lies can also be a way to glossing over the fact. Lies can protect who are telling the lie. Everyone lies, although the ideas of lying to people are wrong, but people still lie about anything in their life. In this essay, it will talk about which ways people will lie and how they lie.
With many of the texts that were assigned to us, each one dealt with the relationship between insiders and outsiders differently. The insider and outsider relationship varies between both the idea of inner conflict and outside conflict. I will be explaining these relationships from the texts of Gooboora, The Silent Pool, The Tell-Tale Heart, and Things Fall Apart. Gooboora, The Silent Pool deals with the relationship of the Aboriginal people of Australia and colonialization, while The Tell-Tale Heart deals with an outsider’s effect on the main character’s subconscious. Things Fall Apart, however, is a mixture of both conflicts that were mentioned. Each of the three texts show how the outside negatively effects the inside.
Concerns about retention and improving training numbers surfaced as managers and supervisors provided feedback about challenges they faced in their ability to lead, communicate, and effectively impacting productivity prompted leaders to seek ways to resolve the causes. Organizations need a better implementation of learning procedures, which can enhance learning, allow people to share experiences, and reflect on important matter (Subjin, 2013). The findings of the leadership team and managers reflected on training new managers’ as well as their capacity to learn and adjust as managers in the workplace.
