Hamlet is a tragic play written by William Shakespeare in the 1600s. In the play there is a tragic hero named Hamlet, he is the star of the play. The play starts out in front of the king’s castle after the king, Hamlet’s father, has passed away. After the king passes away, his brother decides to marry queen Gertrude, Hamlet’s mom, two months after the king passed away. Hamlet is very distressed about the whole situation considering how fast she remarried. In the play the events and characters in act one introduce and begin to develop the theme that, betrayal is often followed by revenge, to drive the rest of the play. The events in act one, scene five begin to portray this theme. In the beginning of the play the guards Bernardo and Francisco are watching because there has been a ghost spotted for the past two nights so Marcellus brings Horatio to where they have seen the apparition because he does not believe that it is true. After finding out it is true the three men decide to bring Hamlet down to speak to it because it looks oddly like his father that had passed away. When Hamlet makes it to watch for the ghost the ghost beckons him to follow it. Hamlet finds out some secrets about his father during this time when the ghost begins to tell him the true story of how he passed. The phantom states, “Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, A serpent stung me; So by the whole ear of Denmark is by a forged process of my death, Rankly abused.
