In order to be proficient in the art of teaching a teacher is required to do much more than walk into a classroom, walk up to the board, and begin to teach. Presenting a lesson is only one step when it comes to having a productive classroom. The state in which the children are in has a direct effect on the productivity of the classroom. The productivity has a direct relation to the classroom management set in place by the teacher. Throughout history there have been many theories regarding how to exhibit successful classroom management. One theorist in particular is Harry Wong. This paper is going to cover the thoughts and theories of Harry Wong on classroom management.
According to Wong there are two types of teachers: teachers that are efficient and teachers that are effective (Harry K. Wong, 1998). Efficient teachers do things right, whereas effective do the right things. The effective teacher is continuously affecting lives. The effective teacher has good classroom management, designs his or her lessons to reach mastery, and has positive expectations that students will be successful. Wong uses the analogy of an unlit candle. He says that every student comes to school with an unlit candle, every day. Every student comes to school with an expectation, and an effective teacher lights this candle (Harry K. Wong, 1998). Classroom management promotes students greatest ability to learn. The most important factor affecting student learning is the teacher. If the teacher is ineffective, students will achieve inadequate progress academically. Effective teaching and learning cannot take place in a poorly managed classroom. If students are disorderly and disrespectful, with no apparent rules and procedures to guide behavior, chaos becomes the norm. Our reading for this week is from the uniquely formatted book written by Harry and Rosemary Wong titled, “The First Days of School; How to be an Effective Teacher.” The focus section of our reading is based in Unit C of the text, which focuses of Classroom Management. Chapters 11-16 were read, and these chapters focus on the topics of how to have a well managed classroom, effectively preparing the classroom, how to introduce yourself to students, seating arrangement/assignment, starting a class, and the proper timing and execution of taking roll. Essentially each chapter of this text follows the same format. There will be a few paragraphs discussing what “effective teachers” would do followed by a few paragraphs about what “ineffective teachers”
Classroom management is the process by which teachers and schools create and maintain appropriate behavior of students in classroom settings. When classroom-management strategies are executed effectively, teachers minimize the behaviors that impede learning for both individual students and groups of students, while maximizing the behaviors that facilitate or enhance learning. Classroom management is really hard and there are many theorists that talk about it and each is different from the other where each theorist has his/her own ideas and thoughts. My philosophy of classroom management is that the management of elementary classrooms require several things. Among patience, determination and motivation are: flexibility, careful planning and consistency. A well-managed classroom did not get well-managed without a teacher who planned, had a flexible vision and was determined. Any new teacher, who is asked, will say they want a classroom with as few behavioral problems as possible as well as one that is easily manageable. But any experienced teacher, who is asked, will tell those new teachers that classrooms do not come "well managed". They have to be made into well-managed classrooms. In my classroom, I will uphold the traits and characteristics that I want to see in my students, through my own actions and words. Another quality that I will instill in my classroom and myself is consistency. In my classroom, I will be consistent in my classroom management. I will not favor a student and let them get away with something, and I will not be overly harsh on a student who is having a bad day or week. My philosophy of classroom management is to allow students to be responsible for their own behavior at all times. I believe allowing students to be responsible for their behavior and actions allow them to have a sense of freedom. When students have freedom, they seem to be more successful and respectful. Classroom management is more successful when the class is student-centered. Students should be included in the planning of classroom rules, room arrangement, and communication should flow smoothly between teacher and student. Classroom management is a popular topic in education. Teachers are always looking for ways to improve their classroom environment, or new ways to deal with problem behaviors. For every person who has ever worked with children, there is an idea, a theory, as to how to best meet children’s needs. Early theorists provide the basis for many current behavior management ideas, and often include a combination of ideas. Theorists such as Abraham Maslow, Rudolf Dreikurs, William Glasser, and Stanley Coppersmith offer insight into the behavior and motivations of children that help teachers design strategies to prevent disruption and provide a positive learning environment for all students.

As a future educator, it is extremely important to prepare for what is in store for each year. Every single class is different, and will bring something different to the table based on the different students in each class. It is extremely important to have a classroom management plan for a group of diverse learners for several reasons. From reading Wong’s book First Days of School, How to be an effective teacher, he states that after doing research in a study reviewing 11,000 pieces of research that spanned 50 years, three researchers determined that there are 28 factors that influence student learning, and the number one factor is classroom management. This is very clear that research backs up how important classroom management is. It is what allows teachers to be effective teachers for their students and are able to keep the students on track. Classroom management also offers organization in the classroom. It refers to all of the things a teacher does to organize students, space, time and materials so that learning can take place (Wong 1998). Without classroom management the entire class would be out of control and very little to no learning would take place.
