Extensive studies have been done on genistein as a therapy for diabetes and obesity, but not enough has been researched in its effect on obesity-associated cancer. Obesity-linked cancer arises at a cellular level due to adipocytes’ ability to release hormones and growth factors (adipocytokines) inducing carcinogenesis. Varying levels of adipocytokines, including leptin and adiponectin, can promote the development of metabolic disorders such as cancer and diabetes. Therefore the most effective treatment is to target the molecular pathways that link obesity to cancer. Genistein is known for its anti-cancer effects and inhibition of adipocyte enlargement and differentiation. This can serve as a targeted therapeutic drug that can concurrently treat cancer and obesity. This review will cover four parts to support the promising effects of genistein: obesity and cancer, dietary anticancer agents, clinical significance, and future directions.
