It is a reasonable fact that the culture of art or the visual art culture changes in direct proportion with the social and political changes in societies and around the world. For example the South African arts, in music, performance, poetry and visual arts of today cannot be equated to that of the 1950s and 60s when apartheid laws were just being newly introduced and imparted into societies and simply as a result the peoples struggle or resistance was very relevant. The struggle or resistance to bring about social change, was not only through uprisings, violent protests or demonstrations, but the arts on the other hand was involved and has been in history, always as a usable element to voice up and act up for the voiceless, unheard and ignored when it is very necessary, due to dissatisfactions of a society or a nation with its leadership or an injustice perform by a state or a government that can no longer be tolerated by its people or any people. The arts have been always able to question the unquestioned and even able to simplify problems and bring solutions especially during the modern age of industrial revolution, for example today in the case of an architectural, vehicle or any structural design, the first step would be to draw, paint, digitize and sample build a plan, before building an actual structure, and art is involved in all these procedures.

The painting The Third of May, by Francisco de Goya, was done to commemorate the events of that took place during the Napoleonic Wars in Madrid, Spain on May 2 and 3 1808. I'm sure artists can agree that art is not something written in stone, it is a matter that is always changing. Looking back at eighteenth century artist and comparing them to artists of today, there are many factors that have changed; from composition and color, to technique and even canvases. There are always trends in the design field. Personally, I don't believe that a single artist can have the responsibility of making a direct impact on the world of art; however, he/she can influence and impact his/her audience to go out and make a difference. So in an era where every individual is caught up and distracted with the media to be focused on world problems, the only real way to communicate with the world is through media, which is where illustration and entertainment come into play.

Art had played an important role in building up civilizations from all over the world through thousands of centuries. It is and will always still the way of projecting artists’ ideas and thoughts into meaningful and tangible objects which we called “work of art”. In addition, It was the path through all these years that dug its way to reach to our current century to show us the beauty of every single era starting from the Upper Paleolithic Period of time (42,000 – 8,000 BCE) reaching to our contemporary artists of today.

Francisco Goya was a Spanish Romanticist painter who was born 1746 and died in 1828. Although he was born near Saragossa, he was living in Madrid when he painted “Executions of the Third of May”. The famous painting refers to 1807 when Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to make an alliance with King Charles IV in order to conquer Portugal, but his true plan was to take over Madrid. When the French troops stormed Madrid, Napoleon claimed that they were just passing through, but when they began taking over, king Charles IV soon realized the alliance was a hoax. Soon after Napoleon’s brother, Joseph Bonaparte became the new king of Spain. The siege lasted three days and on the second day a rebellion broke out and on the third day, the rebels were slaughtered. It is said that Goya himself witnessed the murders from atop the hill of Principe Pio and once the massacre had ended he began making sketches of the bodies under his lantern. Although the story is not proven, it is clear that it affected him greatly.

In The Third of May, 1808, you can see the lines of the guns from the men on the right drawing your eye to the men being shot at on the left. While the soldiers wear mostly dark clothes the few to the front grows lighter in their hue as to not be forgotten by the bright light being shown on the victims of the painting. Behind this scene, there are people in dark clothing or ones that almost fade into the hill behind them, that are cowering in fear.

Leonardo, Da Vinci, was the original artist behind the painting. History and research shows that this is the most visited painting, in the whole world. The art value in it attracts people from all over the world. However, the analysis of the painting doesn’t have to be, purely, enthusiastic and in the form of an appraisal.
