Furthermore, early world literature teaches the reader about life experiences whether the story is sad or full of joy. In addition to this, one can understand another person whole-heartedly through literature. For instance, in The Canterbury Tales the readers can feel the situation of the king Arthur when an ugly women wished the king to marry her. The readers can imagine that they can also do something new in the society just like Shahrazad saved other girls from being killed by her husband Shahrayar in The Thousand And One Nights. The readers can get influence from these stories. The readers can also get entertainment from early world literature. Many literary works especially stories have frame tales. The frame tale about the ox and donkey is full of entertainment to the readers. In that frame tale, the donkey told to ox not to plough the field, then the ox didn’t plough the field next day. After that, the donkey had to plough the field because their owners think that the ox is sick. From this frame tale the readers get entertainment as well as a good moral. Literature is used in English to portray themes and teach the readers morals. Fahrenheit 451 illustrates how one should appreciate the education and resources available to them as it may not always be around. A Raisin in the Sun shows how dreams may be deferred, but they will never die. Of Mice and Men exhibits idealized friendship and the impossibility of the American dream. The Crucible depicts that madness will emerge in society if no one is held accountable for their actions. Money can’t buy happiness is a
Literature is important to allow readers to escape reality within the pages of a book, and also to preserve the past by reading about personal experiences and understanding the norms of different time periods. It is beneficial to provide a new world for the reader, but it shows our history and how it has changed over the years. Many fiction writers hint at real-world experiences or topics and it is up to the reader to interpret the theme of the literature. Authors write to preserve our past and to show a common theme as well as open the door to allow the reader to delve into the words on the page.
Ignoring its effects on language, the King James Bible also had a profound influence on the culture of both its time and the modern era. By spreading the book to nearly all of Europe in the 1600s, it could have a significant influence on art and literature. Literature like Paradise Lost and The Chronicles of Narnia that reference the Bible would most likely not exist today without King James. These thousands of works with their roots in the Bible have sculpted western culture for hundreds of years; so much that it is difficult to imagine a world without them. The Bible has been described as a “book-making book,” meaning that it encourages other literature. Professor Gardiner, in an essay in the Atlantic monthly, expressed that “in all study of English literature, if there be any one axiom which may be accepted without question, it is that the ultimate standard of English prose style is set by the King James version of the Bible.” The prose that the Bible was written in took almost no time at all to start appearing in works of literature.
Reading, whether it is a short story, newspaper, or novel, can affect the way the people view things. Reading has changed countless opinions and views of history and many other things around the world. Most people mature and develop better analytical skills from reading a wide variety of different literary pieces. “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, and “The Man He Killed” by Thomas Hardy are three pieces of literature that have significantly impacted me as a reader.
The Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights or its name in Arabic Alf Layla wa Layla has captivated its audience for hundreds of years and we can still see its influence spilling into our society even till this day in forms such as movies, magazines, and television. Beginning with selected tales for the first time translated into French by Antonio Galland, Western audiences have been captivated and fascinated by the many stories of courage, adventure, comedy, drama and sexual promiscuity. For the first time ever Western audiences had a look into the strange land of the Orient and the collection of stories that have made up The Thousand and One Nights, and ever since it was made available The Nights has greatly shaped the views on Middles
Imagine coming face to face with someone who you think is your friend but really it’s all just an act just so they can get closer to what they want. In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe and the movie The Night of the Hunter directed by Charles Laughton they both have main characters who are two-faced. Both the short story and the movie reveal a creepy mood throughout the stories while addressing the theme that not everyone is who they say they are or who you may think they are. Poe uses irony to reveal the mood and theme, while Laughton uses framing shots, lighting, and non-diegetic music.
Women used to be seen as below men and were not given equal opportunities that men were. Authors started to write books and stories to show that women can be put in situations where they break adversity and show their worth against men. Men used to believe that they were above women at all times and that no matter what they could do what they would like to a woman and not be questioned, and this is where gender roles and social norms started to be a huge factor in everyday life. In both the thousand and one nights and the Decameron, women are seen as not worthy of much and are seen as being downgraded in many situations. Even though certain social norms and behaviors are portrayed in the thousand and one nights and the Decameron, there
There are different forms and examples of exemplary and classic literature which have been deemed as significant works that are highly esteemed worldwide. These examples of literature would awe the world with how much literary skill they entailed when they were composed and written: attention to details as to formation of characters, the most crafty of plots, the most eloquent speeches and lines, the most astounding of twists of scenes, and most of all, the most universal and meaningful of themes. The theme of any literary work is what makes it great as it should be able to encompass the immense diversity of the world and as it would be able to transcend the boundaries of religion, age, race, gender, etc. Two examples of this great and
The result is a story that functions not only as entertainment, but exposes profound lessons that communicate how to view the world and live. The goal of this paper is to show how this phenomenon, how fiction is able to encapsulate the zeitgeist of the time it was created and portray it in an
As Shahrazad tells stories to Shahrayar many readers are looking for a motivated female side of the story. The men in the story are seen as victims. Instead she tells stories of magic, mystery, romance, deception, and wrong of both sexes. Not only is she telling stories but teaching lessons within in each. The purpose of her tales is to make the king see the errors of his ways. I intend to analyze the cause of Shahrayar’s madness and how his position in society alters his macho ego, the purpose of Shahrazad’s tales, and what she hopes to accomplish.
A) What makes these stories both potent and timeless, is their ability to illustrate moral truths and life lessons, such as vanity, overcoming obstacles in life, spiritual growth, and values, through the use of metaphors. In doing so, these stories enable people to learn a thing or two about themselves, such as aspirations and trepidation's. These stories have become successful at staying vivacious, despite times progression and the growth of diverse societies, by virtue of those retelling these primordial tales.
Elle Wiesel novel Night is a day read novel that puts your mind in the centre of the holocaust. The tragic events of this boy’s teen life seem surreal to the reader. Eliezer’s story begins in Sighet, Transylvania. Aside from Eliezer, Eliezer’s father, Shlomo, is the only other constant presence in the book. However, whereas Eliezer develops throughout the book, experiencing horrible revelations and undergoing numerous changes to his life. The book then follows their journey through several concentration camps in Europe. The reason of life disappears to the Jewish people when they were stripped, shaved, disinfected, and treated with almost unimaginable cruelty. Elle Wiesel in the novel Night develops the individual’s response to the purging of reason within their environment when the Nazis rip apart their family, soul and everything between.
Literature is more than stories or collections of words. It has the ability to inspire a transformation of an individual even without a realization. Behind every work of literature there is a deeper meaning and a clearer reality. Often, authors will both intentionally and unintentionally disguise wisdom within a work that helps with life situations and mends the soul. It opens a door to a realm of understanding that may not have been experienced before.
God, you do not know how happy I am to go home! Oh I should probably introduce myself. Hello I am Katrina Potter. Most call me Kat unless they want to be hexed. Potter you may ask? Sadly I am James’ little sister and by little I mean five minutes and thirty-seven seconds younger. Yes we are twins. By coming home I mean I am moving back to England from Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, located in America. Why did I go there you may ask? Mum and Dad thought it was best the James and I took some time apart due to the fact that we got into a little TOO much trouble in our early stages of youth. I got kicked out of Ilvermorny. I guess I haven’t grown out of it. By the sounds of it neither has James. He always writes me about his
