Introduction
In this session long project the class was instructed to watch a video on the introduction to public health and to answer three questions. What are the three core functions of public health? What are the essential services associated with each of these? What agencies (federal, state, or local) are responsible for carrying out these core functions and essential services? Develop policies and plans is also associated to policy development because it “supports individuals and community environmental health efforts” (“Core Functions…”, 2017). In reference to the last core function, assurance, the last five essential services are related. Enforce laws and regulations helps protect environmental health and ensures safety. Link people to needed health services assures the provision of those services when it is otherwise unavailable. Assure a competent environmental health workforce and evaluation of effectiveness are both associated to assurance because they both assure that the health workforce is effectively provided the needed services. Lastly, research is associated to assurances because it discovers “insights and innovative solutions to environmental health problems” (“Core Functions…”, 2017).
Agencies
A few agencies are the US Health and Human Services (HHS), Food and Drug Agency (FDA), and Center of Disease Control. They are responsible for carrying out the core functions and essential services. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), also known as the Health Department, is a cabinet-level department of the U.S. federal government with the goal of protecting the health of all Americans. Providing effective health and human services and fostering advances in medicine, public health, and social services (“About Us”, 2017).
