The Three Great Philosophies Of The Qin

Long ago in the great land of China, there was a dynasty called the Qin. Before the Qin, there was the Zhou, and before that the Shang. The Shang Dynasty was preaxial, and their dynastic cycle ended with the Zhou taking over in 1000 BCE. The Zhou Dynasty reigned for hundreds of years and marked the start of China’s axial age. However, eventually the Zhou fell as well, and the Qin took over. When the Qin first took over, China was in pieces. It was the Era of Warring states, a nasty civil war that tore China apart. The Qin knew the solution to putting the country back together was to bring the people back together. At the time, three great philosophies that are still studied and praised today called Daoism, Legalism and Confucianism arose to do just …show more content…

Daoism thought they should let the people come back together naturally. Legalism was all about instilling rewards and punishments to get people to work together. Confucianism thought they should teach people to be good and want to treat each other kindly. All three have their pros and cons; none of them are perfect. Qin leader Shi Huangdi had the idea to combine two of them, Daoism and Confucianism, in order to create a superior philosophy. Though it seemed like a brilliant idea at the time, the Qin dynasty quickly fell after only 20 years after attempting to make his idea a reality. The Qin and all of China were left confused. Why didn’t combining the winning ideals of the two work? For better or for worse, it is completely impossible to combine the two philosophies. The two are polar opposites and cannot coexist in a single philosophy. They disagree on too much to work
