What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by lxodes ticks or deer ticks. The disease is caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdoferi. Lyme is named “The Great Imitator,” as its symptoms mimic other disease that affect the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, and the heart.
How do People Get Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is spread through the bite of a tick. Due to its size, many people do not realize they have been bitten because most are as tiny as a poppy seed. Once the tick has attached to its host, it will transmit the Lyme and pathogens to the bloodstream.
Three Stages or Lyme Disease
The progression of Lyme Disease is marked by three stages:

When this happens, the tick then becomes a carrier of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease and can infect you with this germ through your skin. Infected deer ticks are normally found in the northeast and upper Midwest United States because of the climate and humidity levels, and become more active in the late spring and early summer months after the birth of new larvae. Lyme disease can affect any organ of the body including the brain, nervous system, muscles, joints, and even the heart. In some cases, if a pregnant woman develops Lyme disease it can pass on to the unborn child and in some cases stillbirth has occurred due to the disease.
