Sam, I am glad you asked me about this. I too am troubled by the events in the news, my concern comes from the people who have not heard the Good News of Jesus. Many people struggle with the issue of evil in the world, they wonder if God is all loving and all powerful how can He allow evil to exist, others also wonder if He exists because of this. I want to assure you God does in fact exist, Romans 1:18-24 tells us God has revealed Himself in such a way that all man knows of God’s existence and divinity. Paul continues to explain there is no excuse not to know of the existence of God and those who refused to honor Him were given over to their lusts and worshiped idols. Disobeying God, doing anything He has prohibited, such as murder, rape, theft, and lying are all types of moral evil. Moral evil is often perpetrated by man against man, however they can include other actions such as deliberately setting a forest fire. Natural evil is the natural catastrophes you spoke of, tornados, hurricanes, floods and such. Some argue these events are separate from moral evil in that they are not caused by it. Natural evil is distinct from moral evil, but is not separate from it, the Bible teaches natural evil is caused by moral evil . The earth was created free of evil, the sin of Adam, known as the fall of man is recorded in Genesis 3. We read the details of the events which have caused sin and thereby evil to enter the world. Adam made a choice, he exercised his free will to disobey God and in this: “Humankind after the fall suffers spiritual deprivation. Although the image of God in man survives (Gen. 9:6), reason has lost its soundness (2 Cor. 4:4), the will is no longer free to choose God and the good (John 8:34), and sinners are spiritually blind (1 Cor, 2:14) and dead (Eph. 2:1, 5). Once able not to sin (posse non peccare), the unregenerate now are incapable of not sinning (non posse nonpeccare, Jer. 13:23; 2 Pet. 2:140. ” This sin nature is in every person.
