The Trial Of Joan Of Arc

Satisfactory Essays
Joan of Arc rapidly rose from being a peasant girl to a highly effective military leader. Unfortunately, she was captured by the English, seeing just the peasant girl the English severely underestimated her towering intellect.

A key example of this was when she was during her trial she was asked if she knew she was in God's grace. The question was an ecclesiastical trap. Church doctrine at the time held that no one could be certain of being in God's grace. If Joan answered yes, then she would have convicted of heresy but if she had answered no, then it would have been an admission of her own guilt.

Instead she answered: 'If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me.'
