How is a person supposed to summarize Trinitarian theology? I have attempted to start this paper many times, but words have alluded me. It is not that the material is uninteresting or bland, but it is difficult to put to paper the greatest reality, the Trinity. It is one of my favorite theological truths that we study at the seminary, but words will never do justice to its existence and work in my own life. This paper will attempt to examine the Trinity with the help of Karl Rahner, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Walter Kasper. The Trinity has been a topic of discussion since the beginnings of Christianity. At this retreat, the notion of the economic Trinity was explicitly present. Christ, the member of the Trinity that became incarnate, was the center of the retreat. It is a Eucharistic retreat thats climax is Adoration of the Holy Eucharist and Mass. During Adoration, Jesus was speaking to the hearts of these teenagers. They were adoring intently and some were becoming emotionally overcome by the experience. For many of them, it was the first time they had ever partaken in such an event. Just as Rahner points out, Christ is the Incarnate one. He was the person these teens were speaking to and adoring. However, it was evident that the Holy Spirit was piercing the hearts of those present. At times, some people would even say “come Holy Spirt, come!” The Holy Spirit was at work through Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist. During part of the adoration, a couple teens played praise and worship music with their guitars. The first song they chose to sing was a song called Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin. This song explicitly speaks of the Father’s love for us, his children and of his identity. One line of the song that is repeated many times goes, “You are a good good Father, it’s who you are and we are loved by you.” This speaks to the Father’s presence through the Son’s Incarnation. It was recognized by all present that the three Persons of the Trinity were active in Adoration, but the Son was explicitly present.
