The Truth About Child Abuse

Neglect is the failure to meet a child’s basic physical and or psychological needs, which is likely to affect the child’s health or development. Neglect is when a parent or carer fails to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter (including exclusion from home or abandonment), medical care, or protection from physical and emotional harm or danger. Additionally failure to ensure access to education or to look after a child because the carer is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is considered as Neglect.

Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.

Child abuse is epidemic in many countries as well as the United States. It is estimated that every thirteen seconds a child is abused in some manner: physically, sexually, emotionally or by neglect (Friedman). Each year, there are over 3 million reports of child abuse in the United States involving more than 6 million children. Child abuse can be reduced with proper education of the parents and with greater public awareness.

Child neglect refers to the continued failure to offer a child with the necessary protection, and care. In addition, lack of proper supervision for the young children for an extended duration of time is also child neglect. There are various signs of possible neglect. These include; inconsistent school attendance, evidence that health care is not being provided for in a child, or lack of proper hygiene (Conte 9). The child may also appear to be lacking clothes or poorly nourished.

Child neglect includes inadequate supervision and physical, emotional, medical, and educational neglect. Physical neglect includes not taking care of a child by not providing a proper amount of food and drink, not making sure a child has adequate hygiene, and exposing a child to unsafe environments (“What is Child Abuse”). Emotional neglect occurs when affection and emotional support for a child is ignored, and this is typically shown in the isolation of a child from friends and family. Parents and caregivers are required to provide medical treatment to their children, and therefore, when that need is disregarded, it is deemed to be medical neglect. Parents have an obligation to their children to make sure that they have all the tools for academic success, so when a child is not enrolled in school or misses too much of school, their education is neglected.

The rediscovery of child abuse can be largely contributed to the news media for highlighting the inhumane treatment of children by parents and guardians. Many children were being viciously punished by parents and guardians as a form of corrective training. The harsh punishment and beating would have resulted in severe injuries to the child and their wellbeing. The disturbing circumstances reported by the media drew strong condemnation from people and organization around the nation. The highlighted problem by the media helped mobilize a very strong social movement to deal with the problems and issues relating to child abuse. The meaning of neglect is a pattern of not being able to provide basic needs.As shown in the chart above neglect is the most common type of child abuse. Neglect is almost three times more common than physical and sexual abuse combined. This category is broken up into three groups: Physical neglect, education neglect, and emotional neglect.

The morning of 1-12-16, Trey was slammed to the floor by his mother (Charlotte). He has a huge swollen left eye, with red marks on it. Charlotte choked him and stated she wanted to strangle him.
