The Vietnam War was one of the longest wars in modern history, which begun in 1954 and ended in 1975. Within 21 years, 1,450,000 lives were lost and tragedy was bought to Vietnam. The war was between the communist armies of North Vietnam who were supported by the Chinese, and the armies of South Vietnam who were supported by the United States. War broke out due to the North Vietnamese government and Viet Cong wanting to rejoin Vietnam under the communist rule. In order to achieve this, they saw that war was a necessity. South Vietnam remained a democratic nation so U.S.A strongly supported them, fighting to protect its sovereignty. That was the reason why the US fought the Vietnam War on the side

The year was 1955, when the war of Vietnam had started. Only it had begun in early November, the days were cold and crisp. Ho Chi Minh, the communist leader in North Vietnam. Ho’s main goal was to engender all of Vietnam into a single state; which inaugurates the Vietnam War. The New World Encyclopedia explains, “U.S. deployed large numbers of military personnel to south Vietnam. U.S. military advisers first became involved in Vietnam as early as 1950, when they began to assist French colonial forces.” Unfortunately the number of casualties is unknown, but the New World Encyclopedia states that “U.S. military fatalities, including missing in action, 57,690; South Vietnamese military, 243,748; Australia and New Zealand military, 469; The Vietnamese Peoples ' Army and NLF, 666,000; South Vietnamese civilians, 300,000; North Vietnamese civilians, 65,000.” The outcome of the Vietnam War was both north and south Vietnam was unified into one state. The country also became a socialist republic, but that did not last long due to the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer rouge eventually cut ties with their allies, which upset Chinese. With all of that it turned the in the Chinese invasion to North Vietnam.

American involvement in the Vietnam War is one of the most highly debated topics discussed today. The United States began their involvement by supporting the French with one billion dollars per year to assist in containing the chaos in Vietnam. Once the French failed, the United States continued to supply money, firearms, and military advisors to aid the South Vietnamese. Americans remembered their promise to support any country fighting against the spread of communism. That promise was hard to keep when government lies were exposed, the number of American graves grew, and the matter of draft issues became too overwhelming to ignore.

Another thing the United States lost in Vietnam was their support. Their people supporting them began to question their presence in Vietnam. Many young Americans started to lead a protest on college campuses because they were against the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. This movement was soon noticed and there was a lot of support behind for over three years. These protesters slowly began to turn against the war after they were being drafted. About 100,000 protesters came together on October 21, 1967 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. They gathered there to share how dissatisfied they were about the war. Since the United States support during the war began to decline in time this was putting pressure on President Richard Nixon to end the war. In 1968 Americans and Vietnamese fightings were being recorded which was known as the Tet Offensive. These fightings were not only just being recorded they were being put on television. Putting this on television was exposing it to the world and changing the way many Americans felt about the war. They started to turn their heads and began to stop giving the United States their support for the war. The United States felt that without having their support for the war there was no way they would be able to win

North and South Vietnam became separate countries and fought in many battles. This was referred to at the Indochina War. Ultimately the French were defeated and a peace treaty called the Geneva Split was signed by both sides making the 17th parallel the border between North and South Vietnam. Bao was then replaced by Ngo Dinh Diem, who had a pro-democracy and anti-communist point of view. South Vietnam was renamed the Government of the Republic of Vietnam.

The United States began sending financial aid and military advisors to South Vietnam to help stop a communist takeover. North Vietnam was run by communist leader Ho Chi Minh, and the South had a non-communist government. An election to unify Vietnam would be held in 1955, fearing that Ho Chi Minh would win the elections South Vietnam president Ngo Dinh Diem refused to hold an election that would unify the country.

The Vietnam War, unofficially beginning on November 1st, 1955 and ending April 30th, 1975, was a key part of US history due to the countless United States soldiers that served in the war over the 8 years and 37 days that the US was involved. For the United States, the Vietnam War had over 58,000 casualties and over 300,000 wounded soldiers. Starting on March 8, 1965, the United States was tied into the losing fight overseas. These numbers are only estimates. Far more people were affected by the war, even after it ended. Hundreds of thousands of veterans committed suicide after the war due to PTSD and other impacts that the war had on them.

These two forces were attempting to unify the country the both love, Vietnam.

The Vietnam War began in 1954 after years of conflict stretching back to the 1940s between the communist regime of North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was attempting to make South Vietnam a communist country; since we are a democracy, the United States opposes the views of communist countries, and because we feared the spread of communism the United States became involved as an ally of South Vietnam. The war ended in 1975, resulting in disastrous effects on Vietnam and America. The assertion of the United States in this war rose controversy among Americans, and I disagree with our involvement in the Vietnam War because of the United States’ reasons to fight.
