The Vietnam War 1/10 soldiers that either volunteered or were drafted was killed during the events of the Vietnam War The Vietnam War was a conflict between the North and South of Vietnam along with the USA. Over 1.5 million Vietnam citizens were killed during the war. Although conflict in Vietnam had already arisen, the War and active US involvement began in 1954. The roots of the war come from Emperor Bao Dai and political leader, Ho Chi Minh, had different ideas for the future of Vietnam. More than one-sixth of veterans who served in the war suffered post-traumatic stress disorder along with higher rates of divorce, suicide, alcoholism, and drug addictions. Nixon ended draft calls in 1972 for an all-volunteer army when American citizens began to flee to Canada to escape conscription. Two-thirds of the soldiers in the Vietnam War were volunteers. Communist forces seized control of South Vietnam in 1975, and was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year. Vietnam had been under French colonial rule since the 19th century. The average age of the men killed in Vietnam was 23.11 years old. During the Vietnam War, there were over 240 days of combat within 1 year on average. Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Philippines managed to stay free of communism once the Vietnam War concluded (“Vietnam War Facts, Stats and Myths”).
