In the novella Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, set in a future where the government controls your life from birth to death. A small group of people rebelled against the government by running into the Uncharted Forest, which acts as the boundary of the city. Few people leave the city into the Uncharted Forest because of the dangers in the forest. The few people who have gone into the Uncharted Forest have burned their own path into the forest never to return. Those who entered the Uncharted Forest have stories told about deaths at the hands of monsters and beasts. Ayn Rand’s characterization of the men who entered the Uncharted Forest before Equality (MWEUFE) exhibit individuality through their actions, intellect, and spirit which shows their desire to free themselves from the oppressive society. …show more content…
“It is whispered that once or twice in a hundred years, one among the men of the City escape alone and run to the Uncharted Forest, without call or reason,” (Rand 48). The passage from Anthem shows how rarely people run into the Uncharted Forest and that they run into the forest without warning. The passage also says that they run into the forest alone which shows they did not want to bring any of the society they ran from with them into the forest. To me those people have shown that they are not scared of the stories that their oppressive government told them as they grew up. They also do not fear what is said to contain the old and forbidden civilization. MWEUFE have also shown their individuality through other
“Anthem” – one of writing authors Ayn Rand, shows her at her most vicious, hungry, and ambitious reading personality not only as a writer, but as a storyteller as well. The classic hit novel “Anthem” is the predecessor to Ayn Rands later books and storytelling works such as “The Fountainhead” and “Atlas Shrugged”, often tackles controversial themes that are still prevalent within modern America today, such as Family & Love. The grandeur novel “Anthem” is a reflection of such topics, all whilst being told with almost an aura of mystery within the novels plotline / storyline. “Anthem’s” take on things such as individuality and self discovery along with universal, self serving terms such as “I” & the word “We” are the key factors in helping differinciate this author Ayn Rand from other authors that write and compse the same genre of literature as Ayn Rand. Anyways, please allow for me to introduce you to the under the surface, deeper themes expressed in the classic debut novel, Ayn Rands “Anthem”
A noticable interesting topic about the story is the way Liberty acts. It seems Ayn Rand, the author, has something against women even though she is a woman herself. The meaning of this is, the women out there that act like girls and only care about fashion and themselves is what is being spoken of. The literary element that is being focased on deals with this issue. This essay will focas on the story "Anthem" written by Ayn Rand containing the literary element of character.
The story’s settings of the novel, Anthem, greatly influences the plot. The novel’s setting takes in a Dark Age where there is no creativity, technology, progress, or optimism. The “society” is completely controlled and manipulated by a central group of leaders. The story primarily centers around a young man named Equality 7-2521 who is a street sweeper. This occupation does not offer him opportunities to expand beyond his small controlled world. Equality 7-2521 take his readers on an adventurous life journey as written in his own journal. Readers feel his oppression and personal desperation as they travel through the dark tunnel and live each day in the shoes of Equality.
“What whip lashed them to their knees in shame and submission? The worship of the word "We.”
In order for a man to have a meaning in his life, He must face and overcome many conflicts. Equalities motivation is to be free in his society and to be different from everyone else. He has the right to be motivated because it's the way to express himself and show what he likes. Anthem is a story of a boys struggle to be free and fight the masses of conformity. Equality believes in curiosity and living a free life.
“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose” (Rand, 95). Anthem is written by American author Ayn Rand about Equality 7-2521 on his quest for happiness. The novel is set in an unspecified time and place in the future. Years after human civilization has gone through a deconstruction in which all knowledge was lost and a new society established with no concept of the individual. “The novel describes the efforts of the main character, Equality 7-2521, to reestablish a sense of personal identity and restore the knowledge of the past by objective scientific inquiry. In doing so, he must face many dangers and privations” (Anthem). Anthem is a dairy of the Equality
The 22nd century was known for the dystopian societies. One dystopian society story that caught my interest was anthem. Anthem is a story by Ayn Rand , This story is about a guy named Equality-2521 . Equality lives in a dystopian society where he is controlled and he can only live until he’s 45 years old and he can only live for his brothers. In the society there is no such thing as being yourself there is no such thing as using the word “I”. This society is run by a council this council is made up of three men and two women . This dystopian Society goes to school until 15 and then they get assigned jobs and names ,Equality is different from all his other brothers equality is taller and smarter. Equality is
Ayn Rand's Anthem shows us her view of our world united under what seems to be communist rule. For example their view of right and wrong; which Anthem portrays is a system of very strict rules which mainly make sure that everyone is involved in a collective role within the society in this system no one is considered an individual or that they can even think as an individual.
The world in Anthem is ideal and it’s a sin for anyone to think that they are more or less than “WE”(Rand, 20). However, in Anthem there is a character that knows there is more to be discovered that his brothers does not know about yet. When Equality goes to the scholars, to inform them on the spectacular stuff he has recently learned, he is chased out of his community and into a forest that no one dares to enter (Rand, 75).
brought them for a civilization where the word ?I? did not exist to a world
Throughout history, people encounter a stage in their lives where they feel the necessity to assert their independence and challenge their abilities and self-worth. In the book, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the author shares his understanding and kinship with the main character, Chris McCandless, a young man who thrusts himself into a life of solitude and a harsh environment during his search for meaning to his life. Krakauer depicts himself and McCandless as modern day transcendentalists with an abundance of competency, resourcefulness and skills as naturalists. Although McCandless chose to experience a life of solitude and face the hazards that nature presents, his lack of preparedness prevented him from completing his endeavor successfully.
Vision a lifestyle where one perceives it as a sin to comprehend data more efficiently than of one’s peers; a felony to long for things that others do not wish upon. Where floods of white tunics and austere minds obliterate the Earth. A colony built upon leaders who asphyxiate anyone from infatuation of any object or significant being; moreover, a world suffocating in collectivism. Through exasperated transcription, Anthem brings about such a community; nevertheless, a world of black and white. Ayn Rand does not overemphasize the effects of totalitarianism, but amplifies it so that it is more effortless for one to enlighten he or she’s notion on the particular proposal. First, by analyzation of “Equality 7-2521”, and

Anthem, a novella written by Ayn Rand, that describes a post-apocalyptic future with a dystopian, technology primitive society. The city that takes place in Anthem exists subsequent to a “war between the many and the few in which the many won”,(Anthem by Ayn Rand). The many destroyed any remnants of the few and started the Great Rebirth to which Great WE was instituted. In this community lives a cursed wight named Equality, that has been divergent ever since he was an adolescent and constantly rebels, whether it be over something minuscule like being smarter than the other children, or momentous. For instance, “sneaking away every night for three hours to a forbidden relic from the unmentionable times “,(Anthem by Ayn Rand). This society restricts the development of
Imagine a world where everyone is equal; living a life that feels almost programmed. Humans may not realize the impact freedom, technology, and independence has on our daily lives; however, Anthem by Ayn Rand demonstrates the importance of these rights. The story portrays the life of a young man, Equality 7-2521, living in a society that is built on severe rules and laws. These laws are designed to eliminate individuality, resulting in an extremely controlled environment. Due to the laws, Equality 7-2521 rebels against the society. For example, Equality 7-2521 was given the job as a Street Sweeper but realized life was unchallenging for him, and was punished for going beyond his limitations. Equality 7-2521 understands that solitude is
