The bilateral relationship between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran has dated back to the mid 19th century when Iran was then recognized as Persia. For some time, through the 1800s and well into the 20th century, the two had a mostly positive relation. These positive relations ended with the arrival of the 1979 Iranian revolution, which carried a heavy anti-American sentiment. The following three decades resulted in continuing degradation for the relationship amongst the two nations. These relations digressed to a point where currently neither country has an embassy or ambassador to the opposite country. Economic Sanctions In the year 2015, trade between the two countries is all but nonexistent. The United States has placed a multitude of sanctions on Iran because of a variety of reasons. For the past thirty-five years, the White House has issued executive orders that have continued to split the two governments. Beginning in 1979, when radicals in Iran’s capitol, Tehran, stormed the United States Embassy and took American citizens hostage, executive orders have frequently been handed down aimed to curb Iran’s actions. In 1979, President Carter expressed that the situation in Iran had deteriorated to a point where the nation’s security, economy, and foreign policy were in jeopardy. Because of this, Executive order 12170 was issued stating, “(President Carter) hereby order(s) blocked all property and interests in property of the Government of Iran, its instrumentalities and controlled entities and the Central Bank of Iran which are or become subject to the jurisdiction of the United States or which are in or come within the possession or control of persons subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.”1 This order was the first of many that would later be given which further separated the two countries.
