The conflict during the play “Fences” was the unsatisfied dreams the Maxson Family had. Troy could not make it into baseball because he was over age. “Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.” (Hughes, Harlem 617). Troy cannot overcome his failure. He does not want to accept the fact that he was too old to get in the major league. Furthermore, during just frustration Troy won’t let his son achieve his dreams and nobody else’s dreams. Troy makes Cory’s dreams dry up like in the poem “ does it dry up like a raisin in the sun”(Hughes 617). Cory gave up his dream to play football because of his dad was in between of his goals. For example, “Some people build fences to keep people out …and other people build fences to keep people in” (Wilson 1057) Bono explains to Troy. Rose wanted to build a fence to keep in the people she love and out individuals who want to harm her family. She wanted to protect her own family. She did not expect that much damage that Troy threw over her sweet home just because he felt unhappy about his dreams deferred. On the other hand, Troy wanted to build one to keep death out of the people he loves and for himself as well. As a matter of fact the “Death”, also means a symbol, which it means the devil Troy is trying to fight, the darkness, which has taken over Troy, and does not let him be happy. Also, while fighting his own darkness he is also depriving everyone else from his or hers dreams, since Troy is not joyful about his life. Moreover, Gabriel Troy’s little brother seems like a symbol himself. He is somewhat compare to a archangel He was always talking about how he and Saint Peter opened the gates. It was ironic when Gave told Troy that he saw his name in St. Peter list but not his because he was dead and gone to heaven “he got a great big book. Got everybody’s name what was ever been born.
