Current Research
Since the implications of CRISPR/Cas9 technologies were discovered, research has mostly gone in two different directions. Bioengineers and pathologists are starting to experiment with using CRISPR as treatments to hereditary diseases with the hope that someday, they could cure certain genetic diseases. Another application currently being experimented with is using CRISPR to genetically modify organisms for various purposes.

Take a group of perfectly healthy mice, for example, and use CRISPR to insert the gene for Schizophrenia into its genome. The mice will actually develop Schizophrenia symptoms. Scientists can then test a variety of drugs on that group of mice to help develop treatments for Schizophrenia. Another application of CRISPR, is that it can be used to quickly insert several hereditary neurological diseases into a single mouse and test to see if a common drug could cure all.
In “Genome Editing: The Next Step in Gene Therapy,” Cathomen discusses how CRISPR is changing the way doctors can treat hereditary muscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy (Cathomen, Hirsch, & Porteus, 2016). Similarly to neurological diseases, scientists can use CRISPR to directly edit an organism with muscular disorders, usually with mice. They’re working towards researching treatments that in the future would allow patients with hereditary muscular diseases to receive healthy genetics and be able to gain control of their muscles again and start to live ordinary lives.
