The Use Of Negative Propaganda In Politics

Politicians use negative campaigning as a type of propaganda in order to win over votes. When running a campaign to win a position, politicians refer to their opponent negatively in order to have the advantage in the ballot. For example, in the 2012 campaign between President Obama and Mitt Romney, there was an ad accusing Obama of declaring a “war on religious values” because “Obamacare” did not allow organizations to reject covering birth control financially. In the end of the ad, the ad asks whom you would prefer to stand with in terms of religious freedom. This is a form of advertising that Romney used in order to gain votes. Negative campaigning started as early as the 1800’s. During the election of 1800, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both used means of negative campaigning in order to give each other a bad reputation. During the election of 1800, Jefferson called out Adams for being a bald and toothless man who just wanted to go into war with France and create a monarch. After either of these processes, the candidates who win over the most states for their party runs in the national election as their party’s nominee. In each state the party leaders decide whether they should run their election usually through a caucus or primary. Primaries are usually held as a typical election where supporters wait in a long line to get their chance to vote in a poll. These polls can be electronic or paper. Primaries are done anonymously. On the other hand, caucuses are elections held publically at one time. In caucuses, a large group gathers and separates into two groups, which stand on opposite ends of the room. The two groups debate for the candidate in which they support. Individuals may switch sides until their final decision. In the end, a count for each side is taken and
