This report will outline knowledge of skin biology and skin care and treatment processes that can be applied to promote optimum skin health and appearance. 1.Knowledge of skin structure and promotion of skin health. 1.1 The integumentary system is an organ containing the skin, hair, nails and glands and specialised receptors. Skin is one of the largest organs in the body in surface area and weight, consisting of two layers: the epidermis and the dermis. Beneath the dermis lies the hypodermis or subcutaneous fatty tissue. The skin has three main functions: protection, regulation and sensation. 1.2 The function and role of the skin Our body is protected by layers of skin which function in ways that can protect our body from the elements that we endure in our everyday life. The skin offers protection for underlying organs from bacteria while the sebum protects against moisture loss as well as providing an antiseptic effect.
