The Use of Force is a short story by William Carlos Williams that is very powerful and leaves the readers with an ethical dilemma. The following social issues can be debated on it: Can physical for good purpose be justified?, What compels the use of force isn’t simply altruism, difference of two separating two different tasks, a dark side persists in every individual, parents concern for their children, use of force as sympathy care for a patient.
The greatest question the story presents is if using force for a good cause is justified. William Carlos was a doctor in real life and so the story presents a situation that can be looked by a different perspective by different individuals. The story shows a combat between the doctor and the

Their comments only serve to do nothing but hamper the doctor from doing what he is required to do. This is well portrayed by their comments, which also reveal the speakers internal thoughts about the couple. For instance, the mother says, “do you think she can stand it, doctor?” (Williams, 1984) in this sentence, the writer demonstrates the use of logos while trying to appeal to the reader how nagging the parents were.
From the story, William depicts the difficulties that people have towards separating their emotions and standards. The doctor’s behavior towards the girl and the young patient’s reaction emphasizes the subject of this discussion. However, the use of ethos, the narrator portrays his character as a credible doctor in the story. The character of both the patient and the doctor reveal a plausible issue comparable in real life. During this period there is and epidemic of diphtheria, which worsens the situation forcing the doctor to take aggressive measures in treating his patient. Revealed through his words, the doctor first tries kindness; “Awe, come on, I coaxed, just open your mouth wide and let me take a look.” (Williams, 1984) However, the reaction from the girl is repulsive, forcing the doctor to be firm.
