The Use of Technology in New York Rescue Efforts on September Eleventh
On the eleventh of September, two planes flew into one of the most recognizable skylines in the world. Two high jacked planes were flown into the upper floors of One and Two-World Trade Center or more commonly known as the Twin Towers. At 9:50 that morning, Two World Trade came thundering down to the ground and shortly after that, One World Trade Center came crashing to the ground. With debris covering sixteen acres of lower Manhattan, and making it difficult for rescue workers to make it around the site, they turned to satellites, robotic cameras, and small lipstick cameras to look in voids where humans could not reach.

Since there are so many wireless telephones is use, it made sense to pull in some of the newer technology to try and locate victims in the WTC. “Cutting-edge radio frequency sniffers” from Lucent Technologies were used to try and track down wireless phone devices. [2] Also with so many Americans stuck in airports due to the grounding of all airplanes in American air space, MCSi and PictureTel came together and offered free service of their videoconference equipment so people could get in touch with loved ones. Ken Hayward reported that one insurance company used videoconferencing to put insurance partners together and was used in emergency planning, especially in terms of telecom infrastructure.
Another technology that was tapped in the rescue effort at ground zero or the site of the former World Trade Center was telescoping cameras. They used the IST’s Dotcam, which was lowered and positioned, into confined spaces that aren’t accessible to rescue workers. Thermal technology was also used in the search and rescue process at ground zero. Thermal imaging camera where used to scan dark areas for signs of life. Thermal imaging camera worked on the concept of picking up heat from the body of other objects that may me giving off heat. This technology helped the rescuers to determine the difference between debris and bodies in the zero visibility.
Robotics was also another big help in the search and rescue
It was a normal day in New York City, with business workers rushing into the World Trade Center. They thought it was going to be like any other day in the office but they were wrong. These office workers were in for the biggest surprise of their life. Planes flown by hijackers crashed into both the Twin Towers, and the Pentagon was hit by a plane as well. Now there is a memorial in New York where the bases of the towers were honoring the people who died that day.
On the date of September 11th 2001, a horrific terrorist attack took place on the World Trade center. From this one act of evil caused thousands of individuals to perish in the matter of minutes. As time progresses on, the things that still remain are the memories and the footage of what occurred on that day. As the two buildings were in engulfed in flames and people stood helpless on the ground, some witnesses turned to photography and video footage to hopefully help this day to never be forgotten.
On September 11, 2001 four passenger commercial jet airliners were hijacked and as a result approximately 3,000 human lives were lost. When asked about 9/11, many can recall exactly what they were doing when they heard the news that a plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings and many Americans can tell you how it all unfolded and the reason behind such a travesty. The “official story” provided by officials, and restated by Sofia Shafquat, producer of “9/11 Mysteries: Demolitions” say that “four passenger planes were hijacked and taken radically off course, within an hour, two of the planes had flown into the enormous steel towers of the World Trade Center, creating fires and eventually toppling them” (Shafquat).
September 11, 2001 began as any ordinary day for Elvia Hogan as she left her home and headed for work. She recalled the sun shining and the sky a bright blue as she entered the counseling office at Hunter High School. As she approached her desk, she opened her computer to find the unbelievable image of an airplane in the top of one of the World Trade Center buildings. Phones were ringing, as the counselors began watching the news to follow what was happening when suddenly, a second plane flew into the neighboring tower.
It was 8:45 and it was a Tuesday and a group of people had a plane full of 20,000 gallons of gas. Then, the plane crashed the twin towers were about 110 story high and about 80 floors were burned. The plane crashed at the 60th floor and 343 were killed during that plane crash. The second tower was collapsed, too. Only six people survived and others past away people can’t find their bodies because it's only dust.
On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. the US became a nation transformed, four planes were hijacked and turned into deadly guided missiles. One of the planes crashed into the World Trade Center, carrying 20,000 gallons of jet fuel plowed into the north tower. The collision created burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story sky scraper, immediately killing more than 3,000 people and injuring hundreds. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, the media broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a
A Boeing 767 containing approximately twenty thousand gallons of jet fuel flew into the North tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on a pristine morning at 8:45 a.m. on September 11, 2001. The collision left a giant opening close to the eightieth floor of the one hundred ten story skyscraper, abruptly ending hundreds of people’s lives and trapping hundreds more in the floors above. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin- the South Tower- got underway by the local authorities, television news channels broadcasted live images of what at first appeared to be a freak accident. Then, eighteen minutes after the initial plane crashed into the tower, a second Boeing 767–United Airlines Flight 175–appeared out of the sky, turned sharply
September 11, 2001 is a day that America will never forget. Most Americans were starting their day, drinking their favorite morning goodness, and getting ready for the day, when a plane flew into the World Trade Center on the television. Just after eight o’clock American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into World Trade Center’s North Tower, and all eyes tuned into New York City to see the catastrophic event. Twenty minutes later during the live news broadcast, United Airlines Flight 175 collided with the World Trade Center’s South Tower. The carnage did not stop there, shortly after nine-thirty American Airlines Flight 77 struck the western face of the Pentagon, and thirty minutes later, United Airlines Flight 93 came down in a field near Shanksville,
In an interview, Skot McDonald talked about his experience on the streets a few blocks from the twin towers, “We started backing away and then had to run from a tidal wave of collapsing debris rushing down the street at us as the north tower collapsed,” (Liddy). McDonald and his friend were photographers and were staying very close to the twin towers. They woke up on September 11 like a normal day. Skot’s parents called him to tell him about the attacks. On 9/11, emergency groups in Manhattan needed to evacuate an area a certain distance around towers to maintain safety for inhabitants and tourists watching in horror.
The twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world with 110 stories. Everyday, 45,000 people walked to their work in the World Trade Centers. Little did the employees know, Tuesday, September 11, 2001 would be the last day they ever stepped foot in the buildings. At 8:46 a.m., the unthinkable happened. American Airline flight 11 hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. The plane burst into flames which started the tower on fire. Workers and visitors fled to
American Airlines Flight 77 circled over Washington, D.C., and soon slammed right into the Pentagon military headquarters around 9:45 a.m. Due to the immense jet fuel, most of the building collapsed. “All told, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner.” As this devastating site was being broadcasted all over America, the horror in New York took place. The south tower of the World Trade Center immediately collapsed into smoke. Due to the burning jet fuel, the structure of the skyscraper couldn’t withstand the heat. Less than a half hour later, the other tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. There was close to
The deconstruction of the Twin Towers became one of the most compelling aspects of the falling of the buildings and ultimately the death toll on 9/11. The resources available now have demonstrated how, the building systems impacted the falling of the Twin Towers. In addition, it also shows how deconstruction also had a direct impact on the death toll. For the most part, the building systems were not properly tested. If they had been properly tested, it could have decreased the overall death toll on 9/11.
September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
Source A explains that the USA Patriot Act gives federal officials to track and intercept communications for foreign intelligence. Yes, this is for suspected criminals, but the fact is that they have the power to do this and who knows what else they are doing and might do. Similarly, in 1984 the telescreens can see and hear what is going on around them and the Party uses that to check in on their people, like the government is doing with our cell phones. The use of other technologies is also a bit invasive. Source C is a report of about EpicMix, an application for skiers to track how much they are are skiing.
It started out as a typical morning in the World Trade Center. 14, 154 people were arriving that morning for work at 1 and 2 World Trade Center. Until the unbelievable happened. At 8:46 am the north tower was struck by a American Airlines Flight 11 headed from Boston to Los Angeles. At first the people in the tower thought an explosion occurred like in 1993 World Trade Center bombing , or a little two passenger plane hit the building. It wasn’t until people on the ground found a very large landing gear, luggage to Los Angeles that anyone realized it was a passenger plane.
