The second form of approach to the utilization of ICT’s to codify knowledge is found in the development of documentation and SOP’s. Hislop (2013) cited Hsaio’s work who examined the effectiveness of this approach in an organization’s utilization of a “knowledge repository concerned with updating and sharing ‘best practice’ procedures for the installation and maintenance of equipment” (Hislop, 2013, p.207). This has been an effective method of moving knowledge across the training function in my organization whose training function operates within three different regions of the country. A SharePoint page has been used to capture standard operating procedures which have been gleaned from the best practices from across the organization.…show more content… In my organization’s context, this is once again accomplished through the utilization of SharePoint to highlight contact for specific bodies of knowledge. A searchable contact list has been provided which describes contact information for individuals by functional area. Additionally, the Training Department has identified key subject matter experts who handle recurring issues such as LMS challenges, technical support, safety questions, etc. Based upon the informational resource required training personnel can determine who best to contact to gain support and information. As Hislop (2013) points out regarding this method of practice, there is “no attempt […] made to codify knowledge and expertise. Instead, knowledge is shared via interpersonal communication and interaction […]” (p.209).
The final approach to ICT utilization in knowledge management outlined by Hislop (2013) may be found in the application of collaboration tools to facilitate knowledge transfer. “Here ICTs, via a wide range of virtual/web-based platforms, forums, and conduits such as email, instant messaging, discussion boards, intranets, chatrooms, blogs et., create conditions where rich interpersonal interactions can take place […]” (Hislop, 2013, p.210.).
