Orientation When it comes to people’s preferences there are distinct differences in the variety of orientations people can have. Not only are there different types of orientation but also people can have different combinations of orientations. The human psyche is not always black and white, gay and straight; there are shades of grey of what people prefer both sexually and romantically. It is important to realize that. Think of it more as a 3-D cube with parts of some orientations overlapping and blending. Individuals who experience sexual attraction, most of the time their sexual orientation and romantic orientation are often in alignment. Romantic orientation being a person’s romantic and emotional attraction based on gender and sexual orientation being the sexual attraction of a person based on gender. To better, understand the different variations of orientation look at Figure 1. the Y-axis represents sexual feeling, with “1” having the most sexual feeling and “0” having none. The X-axis represents how much emotional and romantic feeling you would exhibit, while the Z-axis is the general sexual feeling you exhibit. Note that this does not include the varying gender that people prefer; this is a binary representation on sexual and romantic identity and does not include people under the transgender umbrella, for more information on that see “Pansexuality” below.
