Abstract
The topic of this research is on the types of police-community approaches law enforcement use to respond to the community and crime. The question presented in this research is “What are the various types of police-community approaches?” and is based on the findings from the year 2006 to 2016. During the process of this research, no participants were used, and instead, published statistics from online websites were used such as the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) 2013 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey, the Inter-University Consortium for Political Survey Research (ICPSR), and the BJS’ Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (CSLLEA) 2008. There has been little involvement of the community with law enforcement, making it difficult to work with and to understand the community. However, in order to involve the community with law enforcement, a trust and mutual respect between law enforcement and the community must be built. Thus, law enforcement have responded through the use of various types of police-community approaches to gain the trust and respect.
This research examines police-community approaches that have been used since by law enforcement in the United States. This research hopes to show the various types of methods law enforcement use to connect with the community it serves. It also hopes to provide clear insight on the various types of police-community approaches for those who are unfamiliar with the topic. The research begins with the literature review that examines the strategy, impact, trustworthiness, and correlation between police and the community. It is then followed by the methods used, such as published statistics, secondary data, and findings based on the literature review, to accomplish this trend study and concludes with final comments on police-community approaches.
