The Victor Although all eyes in the country are on the two of them and the game makers have placed all of the odds against them, they both have internal conflicts, tearing them up, to bring them to the triumph they acquire. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, both from District Twelve, hear the words at the same time, “….the rule book has disclosed that only one winner may be allowed.” They stare at each other in disbelief, as Katniss begins to beat herself up over buying into their stupid story that they would allow two victors; as long as they were from the same district. Why did they fall for the game maker’s deception? Peeta realizes it really shouldn’t be a surprise to them, with everything they have just endured in the game arena. To be the last two tributes standing, out of the one male and one female tribute, chosen from eleven other districts. He draws the knife from his belt. Without even a thought about it, she becomes conscious of her bow loaded with an arrow which is pointing directly at Peeta. When his knife hits the ground, she lets the bow be taken by gravity, in the same direction as his weapon. The shame she feels is evident, with the redness of her face, as she steps back. She could never kill Peeta, even with his pleadings; for her to go on living. She can’t and she won’t. She pushes the weapons back to him, needing him to kill her to put an end to this game before the game makers send in more terror, in an effort to speed up the process, she demands
