The Vikings were a group of Scandinavian raiders that were around from about the 8th century to the 11th. They mainly attacked the British Islands , the Frankish empire, England, but they also plundered places such as the Iberian peninsula and northern Africa. Vikings did not always settle into the places that they found, for instance after exploring North America they left the place never to return again. Even so, after landing on Greenland they colonized themselves there, and ancestors of the Vikings still live there today. So now that you know a little about the history of the Vikings lets go into detail about the specifics of the Viking age. (Peter Sawyer, Oxford Ill. History of the Vikings p. 1-19)
The Vikings escaped from tyranny and fled Europe. They found and settled in Iceland and Greenland. They made expeditions to find new lands were others wouldn't dare go. If it wasn't for the Vikings, the world would be drastically change. Some lands might not have even been discovered or even inhabited. Thankfully, the Vikings were there so, they we could find them and discover new and precious metals and resources. That of which, the world uses and is grateful for today. Vikings really cherished time spent voyaging with their family and closest friends. One of the reasons their
Vikings, also known as Norsemen or Northmen, were a group of people from the Scandinavian warriors that existed from the 9th century until the 11th century. They were seafaring warriors that raided and claimed their areas in Europe. Their disruptive influence affected the European history. The pagan vikings, which were Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, were prompted to take their raids caused by overpopulation or helplessness of their victims.
Viking history and culture have been depicted in many movies, television series, and stories. Vikings are commonly known as barbarians that raid villages and intimidate others with huge ships with dragon heads, and horned helmets. This information is based on facts, but has been distorted and exaggerated over many years and tales. Viking history spans from the years 780 until 1100, which is the time span of the Viking raids. Not every Scandinavian was a Viking; Vikings were known as the men that conducted raids and bloody battles. The old definition of Viking was synonymous with the term pirate. The modern definition is relevant to the Scandinavian medieval culture, to include farming, crafting and trading.
This age lasted from the late eighth century to the late eleventh century. When thinking about Vikings, the word ruthless and fierce may come to mind, but this isn't necessarily true. They were farmers and just wanted to make a living. Outside of raiding other towns and countries, the Vikings lived in an organized society. In their culture, the women had a strong say in everything and had a very big image. They were the main help on the farm and around the house, they were not forced into marriages, and if they were in a marriage they didn't like, they had the right to leave; which was very different from other cultures back then.
Vikings throughout history have created a false sense of identity over time. Usually in medias and stories the Vikings are depicted as savage barbarians bent on destruction, but never as structured civilized people who had a well formed and organized military. The Vikings were a collective clan of people, that stemmed from northern europe during the middle ages. They engaged in many activities that were propounded in other countries, those being trade, exploration, and colonization. They founded many cities on three different continents, several of which are still occupied.
Vikings were a group of people from Scandanavia (modern-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden) who navigated the North Atlantic and Baltic Regions, sailing to destinations in the south to North Africa, and east to Russia, Constantinople (“Istanbul”) and the Middle East, as ‘hit-and-run’ looters, traders and colonists. Notably, the Vikings were seen as a barbaric clan by their victims, especially to those in Europe with whom they had an imposing influence. Equally, as the Old Norse (the language of the Norsemen) translation of the word ‘Viking’ signifies, the Vikings were feared as fierce and ruthless pirates. However, most of these people may not have called themselves Vikings since only a few engaged in raiding and pillaging, which was seen as a
Vikings, also known as Norseman or Northman, were members of the Scandinavian seafaring warriors who raided and colonized wide areas of Europe from the 9th to the 11th century. And whose disruptive influence profoundly affected European history. These Pagan Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish warriors were probably forced to undertake their raids by a combination of factors ranging from overpopulation at home to the relative helpless of victims abroad. The Vikings were made up of land owning chiefs and clan heads, their retainers, freeman, and young energetic members who sought adventure and treasures overseas.
The Vikings were Norse people from Scandinavia who lived during the Viking Age from eighth century to the twelfth century. The first arrival of the Vikings in Ireland was in 795. But at that time the Vikings used the strategy hit and run until the 9th century they began to settle with the Irish. The Vikings were successful around the world because they were very skilled in navigation and very powerful they reached China, Russia, and the Middle East. The Vikings had a great impact on the Irish society in many aspects, for example, trade, art, military, and technology.
It is widely believed that the Vikings were little more than barbaric and brutish warriors that had little to no lasting influence on European societies. This belief, however, is wrong. The viking age lasted approximately from 800 CE - 1100 CE and created a lasting influence on things such as art, technology, cultures, trade and currency. There is still currently a firm hold of the concept of Vikings in Danish societies and there are traces of Scandinavian dialect in places like Scotland and North England. The Vikings, while they did have an excellent military system, were more than a violent society of people and they have made many last influences on modern society and were a prominent and important empire in early Europe.
People are always making Vikings seem like rough, unhygienic, vicious pirates. Vikings are much more than that. They are poets, artists, and they were a lot more hygienic and clean than most people of their time period. Vikings were very intelligent and crafty people. People do not realize how interesting and unique the Viking society was. There are a lot more to the Vikings than we
'Ravagers, pagans, ruthless," Time magazine claims on the Vikings. They were more than that. Without them history wouldn't be the same. They had trade routes from Iraq to the Canadian Pacific. They were Metalworkers. they were explorers "whose restless hearts brought them to North America some 500 years before Columbus." They were warriors. They were Democrats. Many people think of them as the men who worshipped Thor and had horned hats. Well one of these is wrong. Vikings never wore horned hats. They had great Hygiene. They slave traded. Much like Sparta their women had rights. Vikings were known also for farming.
This time period is commonly known as the Viking Age of Scandinavian history. A Viking's most treasured weapon was his sword. They were handed down generations because of inheritance, they were often named and could be inscribed with writings by talented blacksmiths to magically increase their powers. The Vikings had no professional standing army and tactics and discipline seemed to have little to no development. They did not fight in regular formations. Aspiring warriors wanted armed service so they fought next to famous fighters in order to be rewarded with weapons and fame of their own. The houses the Vikings lived in were made out of wattle which is sticks. Many people believe the Scandinavian people were big and muscular, but that was not the case. Due to the short summer seasons, growing crops was difficult and resources were always scarce. As a result, many of the Scandinavian people were much smaller than commonly depicted due to limited food sources. The Vikings were a special culture compared to many others before and after
When the average person thinks about Vikings they probably imagine muscular, wild eyed, and bearded men ready for battle. Some aspects of that statement might be true, however there are a lot of misconceptions about the Vikings. Among the most common myths is that the Vikings wore horned helmets when in fact they did not, instead their helmets were more rounded made with leather and metal reinforcements often including a face guard. The idea that Vikings wore horned helmets was introduced in the 19th century when they became a romanticized group of people. Gerry Larson an avid explorer of Norwegian heritage says that, “Romantic authors did not know what sort of equipment the heroes of the sagas had used and archaeology as a science
The word 'Viking' has been used to identify people who lived in Sweden, Norway and Denmark in early medieval times. In the language Old Norse, 'Viking' means pirate. Sometimes they were known as 'Northmen' or Danes. The Vikings shared a similar heritage as the Saxons, a group of people who had previously invaded Britain.
