The English language has always had vivacity. Before English was even a known language, its linguistic precursors were set in a perpetual forward moving motion that led to the development of English as we know it. The English language has never been static in geographical location, vocabulary, grammar, and certainly not in the people who speak it (Crystal).
However, it is important to note that a lingua franca is necessary for people to communicate on a global level. International relations are important and have been important throughout history. The League of Nations was the first of many alliances to allocate a special place for English making it lingua franca for its proceedings. Lingua franca is a shared language of communication used between people whose main languages are different. In order for a language to become lingua franca, it must be widely used by those who wield power (Crystal).
There are two main factors that make English a lingua franca. The two factors are its internal and external qualities. The internal qualities of structure and lexicon are important items in any language. English is much simpler in these structures than other languages. For example, Latin has accusative, dative, genitive, feminine, masculine, or neuter, but English does not have these distinct features. Moreover, English has a vast vocabulary making it more flexible and easier to pair with other languages. The external qualities of the number of users, geographical diffusion,
Language is the tool that can create nations as well as divide culture, countries, and people. The use of language is important in establishing identities. For people like Anzaldua it can strengthen an identity while for people Fanon mentioned it strips a person of their identity and replaces it with the superior language and culture. Language is constantly changing and expanding, which in turn causes identities, cultures, and nations to change and expand as
The English language is known for its vocabulary and creativity of words. Where in, the other languages have only one or two words which carry a particular meaning, English may have five or six for a particular word.
Language is simply a tool for people of the universe to communicate with one another and it makes the World more complicated but also interesting. Language makes you share something, makes people understand you through expressing yourself or your opinion. Starting from the very early stages of human life there’ve been lots of various languages which were the ways for the connection among populations. Now, in our modern days we have many languages from the very famous and international ones to the languages of small communities. Every culture has its own main language and people value their own language differently from many aspects. For some people speaking in your own “mother tongue” where you must speak the language of the place you’ve born is important, for
Language and communication are the reason why we are able to speak to one another, learn from one another, and form our own opinions and thoughts. Being able to speak and understand what is being said is a daily function everyone relies on. Using language to communicate allows us to express to one another, even if that person is from a different country.
In the English language, there are several words that are considered off-limits in everyday use for Americans. This is as a result of the negative significance the words held historically. However, the words are still used in specific contexts. For example, these words have been used for educational purposes or in comedy skits. This leads one to wonder how these boundaries have been set within language and why can they be used in specific contexts. It is evident that the development of cultural identity is influenced by the heavily honored restrictions placed on these words. It has shaped people’s behavior within different media platforms. In order to identify the effect of language and these external sources in society, the bias, story framing and effect of perceived notions are analyzed within three different types of texts.
Language, most everybody knows what it is. This is one thing that when we were born, we already had and this is a thing that we always use every day in our life. We use it in order to tell someone what we are thinking or to tell our feelings to somebody. In the past, all of the nations, and people used just their first language. We always believed that knowing only our mother language was enough. In school, they did not force students to study a second language because they thought that everybody could communicate with each other by using a first language and it was unnecessary to do something like this. And when somebody said that a second language would become an important thing in the future, nobody believed it. However, as time goes by, everything in the world changes. Our world becomes a land without borders. In business, there is high competition and more freedom. We can communicate easily and travel abroad quickly. All of these happenings make people motivated in order to survive in this world. Therefore, language becomes a more important factor that helps people to survive. Some people say that the more languages they know, the more opportunities they get. In school, all teachers are anxious to make a change to a course by supporting students to turn to study a second language because they think that this is a better way to help their students become better people. Learning a second language is a valuable thing for our life and business. There are a lot of
because it is more logical, more expressive, simpler or perhaps has a more richer vocabulary
English is actually amongst those languages that are widely spoken and it is considered amongst those languages that are rated as “International Language”. In many of the countries where English is not their national or mother language yet it is being spoken by the people of that country and even it is the most important language of the educational system of the country especially the developing countries. If we look at the history of English language then we have to move back to the 5thcentury AD, when the Britain was
Even though the English language is constantly evolving, that does not mean that we should accept the use of imperfect English, be ignorant towards spelling and grammar, and forget about the basic rules of English.
How difficult is it to understand the English language? The Earth is made up of a variety of languages that have its difficulty of understanding and English is nowhere near the difficulty level of the Mandarin or Hungarian language. But even if a fluent Latin American speaker migrates to an English-speaking country like the United States, it may be a difficult transition for the individual to learn that language. They must take ownership of a language which means that one must consider possessing the knowledge of the dialect of the country. Obtaining ownership of a language is a necessity because in order for an immigrant to get by in a new country they must secure their cultural identity and it is essential for everyday purposes.
It is not difficult to determine why English began its rise as the predominant language in the world. Britain, the progenitor of the language, once bragged that the "Sun never set on the British Empire." This is true in that the empire stretched to all areas of the globe, and the nation of England had influence beyond just its possessions. Because the conquerors spoke English, many of the citizens learned to at least use a few simple phrases that would allow them to take the better jobs offered by the English.
Dictionaries are a part of us, a part of life. The Oxford English Dictionary shares a space on my shelf along with the other fascinating theories of The English Language. Samuel Johnson, a great man, published the first Oxford Dictionary in 1755. After so many years of hard work, why are we trying to ruin our native language through text talk? This dictionary is not only a few pages of words; in fact, it is more useful than any other tool could ever be. Reasons to our language variation can be due to several situations such as: politics, media, education, war and technology. [1]
Crystal continues by revealing his opinion on the future of the English language and its global undertaking.
It is in the earliest parts of life that we begin to categorize the world around us. To a child, a being that sprouts from the earth to reach toward the sun is considered a tree; a large mass of liquid that changes its colors to match the sky and smells of salt is the ocean. We apply simple terms to everything, so that we may easily communicate our thoughts to our peers. As I have grown older, it has become a habit to look back on life and in doing so, I have noticed that the users of the English language attempt great lengths to apply a word to remarkably complex of subjects. They are not, however, able to perform the same task with themselves. We as people tend to gravitate toward others with similar characteristics, whether it be a face or place; it can be said of both the older generation and its younger counterpart. As the eldest child of my family, I was expected to reach a high standard throughout life. And with no other options, that is what I did. They’d brag about how brilliant I was; how I’d read and write religiously; how I was such a good girl and far more mature than others my age. I devoured my parents’ praise like it was my only source of sustenance. Soon, my world revolved around the satisfaction that came with their pride in me. So when I was a child trying to find my place in the world, it was quite natural for me to fall into the welcoming arms of those who shared my characteristics. The same can be said of all elementary-aged children. For several, it
The English language has always been an important part of our history. It was taken from from England and developed into our current spoken and written language. Throughout the centuries it has been processed and changed to fit to our needs and of course it has been taught. Teachers have helped produce our current version of English, it has been taught from generation to generation and I would even say, without teachers our written and spoken form wouldn’t be as complex as it is now. In the 1960s, teaching was one of the few jobs that women could go into. Those that were considered the brightest and the best had only few choice beside going into teaching and nursing. But today, the best and brightest won’t go into teaching because they can become lawyers, doctors, or engineers. In the past they became teachers because it was their only option, not because it was appealing job. Teachers are an important role in society, even if they aren’t paid well enough, and are considered as minority. The reason why I am talking about this is because I want to become a high school english teacher, with a double minor in literature and french. English is an important subject at school, it helps improve the vocabulary and grammar of students. Reading the required books in the English has always been my favorite part of class. I have always loved to read and look forward each year to read the books in the curriculum. All the teachers I had over the years for this subject were nice and
