Men and women. Even the name of the female gender is derived from the male species. For years, women have been discriminated against in an array of areas such as politics, at home, and in the workplace. The most debated area of gender discrimination is the wage gap between men and women. After reviewing the following facts, it is obvious women are essentially just as valuable as men, and therefore should be treated equally in the workplace.
The pay gap between males and females has been a topic that has been heavily debated for years. To every story, there are two sides, but to this one, in particular it’s obvious as to which one is morally correct. When examining each individual fact it is clear to see that gender discrimination against women in the workplace is wrong.
There are numerous examples of how the wage gap is still apparent in today’s society. Women only make 77% of what men earn in the same occupation (Carnevale, 1). Meaning women make only 77 cents to every dollar men earn. This gap in wages is backed up with no probable cause for the wage gap between genders. After seeing these statistics it easy to see women are discriminated down to the cent based on their gender.

This difference in pay due to gender seems like it would be an obsolete practice in the twenty-first century, but it is real and is affecting millions of women and households in the country. In 2014, women working full time in the United States were paid 79 percent on average of what men were being paid, which is a gap of approximately 21 percent. This means that in the United States, females earned 94 cents on average to every dollar earned by males. According to one study by the Department of Labor’s Chief Economist, a typical 25-year-old woman working full time would earn $5,000 less over the course of her working career than a typical 25-year old man working in the same career. The reason why this pay gap exists does expand into other factors such as education, experience, the work being performed, qualifications, age, and ethnicity which are taken into account. The studies being conducted on the pay gap has economists verifying that discrimination is the best overall explanation and factor of the difference in pay between males and females.

Since the beginning of time there has been inequality between men and women. This can be traced back to the days when the men would and hunt and gather and the women would stay home and take on the homemaking such as taking care of the children, cooking, and cleaning the house. Until 1920 when women were finally allowed to vote, gender inequality was very apparent. More recently, gender inequality presents itself in the form of gender wage gaps.
