The gender pay gap is the difference between male and female earnings averaged in percentages. This difference in pay due to gender seems like it would be an obsolete practice in the twenty-first century, but it is real and is affecting millions of women and households in the country. In 2014, women working full time in the United States were paid 79 percent on average of what men were being paid, which is a gap of approximately 21 percent. This means that in the United States, females earned 94 cents on average to every dollar earned by males. According to one study by the Department of Labor’s Chief Economist, a typical 25-year-old woman working full time would earn $5,000 less over the course of her working career than a typical 25-year old man working in the same career. The reason why this pay gap exists does expand into other factors such as education, experience, the work being performed, qualifications, age, and ethnicity which are taken into account. The studies being conducted on the pay gap has economists verifying that discrimination is the best overall explanation and factor of the difference in pay between males and females.

After years of Civil Rights Movements and Pay Equity Acts, as of 2014, women still only make 79 cents to a man 's every dollar. However, men continue to earn high salaries compared to their female counterparts in the labor market. The challenge in balancing between private and work life among women makes the gap wider. Men are majorly present in the full-time jobs that pay high wages. Over several years, many industries have made significant changes in their work environment to achieve equality between genders. When looking back on what seems to be a societal norm, wage discrimination has always been in favour of men. A main issue in the workplace is that women are often separated into job categories to begin with. These categories are similar to groups who belong to a social status. Since the beginning of time there has been inequality between men and women. This can be traced back to the days when the men would and hunt and gather and the women would stay home and take on the homemaking such as taking care of the children, cooking, and cleaning the house. Until 1920 when women were finally allowed to vote, gender inequality was very apparent. More recently, gender inequality presents itself in the form of gender wage gaps. Although some argue women get paid the same wages as men, there are enormous amounts of evidence that proves this wage gap is definitely still present. The wage gap is noticeable to many, however, pin pointing the causes and solving them are not as easy as some might think. In order to actually understand this injustice, many factors must be taken into account to discover what is actually going on in society today and why this mistreatment is still happening. The only way to truly understand this problem and what steps should be taken to fix it takes research into what the main causes are and ways that it can be combatted.

A perceived considerable issue in modern society is inequality outcome among different groups of people. The gender wage gap has been a persistent issue since the 1960’s. Although it has decreased throughout the years, it has not disappeared. Why does this wage gap exist even though women are participating in the same exact jobs as men? Some studies have shown that the wage gap has been present throughout history because women used to receive less education and have less experience in the work field, women work less hours due to maternity leave or age, and women of color working in lower paying jobs. Studies have also shown that women working in STEM fields make less than men.

The debates range from several things with most focusing on how big the gendered wage gap is, how much of an effect it has on women’s everyday lives, and whether or not the gendered wage gap still exists to this day.
