As of December 11, 2013, the company operates 8,582 stores in all 50 states. Walgreens was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. Walgreens headquarters are in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois. Walgreens offer customer goods and services, plus pharmacy, health and wellness services in the United States through its retail drugstores, Walgreens Health Services division, and Walgreens Health and Wellness division.
In the past Walgreens business approach needed a command-and-control method to management. They set out clear procedures for their employees, and they followed them. It was up-front and operative for the task at hand, it functioned for quite a while. But then the competitive setting transformed. New competitors arrived in the market, for example third-party pharmacy benefits management companies they deliver prescriptions by mail which makes it so much more convenient for the consumers. More stores started providing in-store pharmacies. An even greater trial was the development of Internet pure plays, for example Amazon and Google, which vend most of what they carry. All these obstacles provided a greater chance of them losing their customer base. Changing structures was the only way to update customer service.
