This poem “The War After War,” by Debora Greger has two meanings within it. One is that throughout the poem it talks about how the author grows up watching his father and his neighbors. He never really understands what is going on when he is younger but as he grows older he seems to understand it more. Also, it shows history and how day to day life was in America in times of war. In the first part of the poem it describes different events happening on the television. From a child’s point of view he describes it in a very innocent way. Saying paratroopers who were falling into war were just “gray toy soldiers” and that “toy airplanes droned over quilted fields.” The author obviously didn’t understand the severity of what he is watching.
