September 11, 2001 is a date that has been etched into our nation’s history. On that date, four airplanes were hijacked by men from the terrorist group, al-Qaeda, and were used as weapons of an act of terrorism. In the span of about three hours, the four planes that’ve been hijacked crashed into New York City’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon just outside of Washington DC, and onto a field in Pennsylvania. On this date, approximately three thousand americans were killed that morning. In effect, it has caused a “Global War on Terror”. Under Bush’s Administration, our Department of Homeland Security has strengthened its tactics in protecting our nation. The term enhanced interrogation techniques is constantly being used in lieu of the word torture. This may be due to the fact that the form of torture is illegal in the United States.
However, with torture being illegal on United States soil, there is a loophole in the situation. Places like Guantanamo Bay for example, are military prisons or detention camps containing prisoners being put through abuse and torture. Rayman’s article for Time magazine, "Guantanamo Bay Detainee Details 'Sadistic ' Abuse.", describes “a man detained in Guantanamo Bay for nearly 13 years has said he was subjected to ‘dirty and sadistic’ abuse at the prison...” (Rayman). Guantanamo Bay is located in Cuba. While Cuba has sovereignty over the camp, the United States total is being given total control and jurisdiction over the camp. Allowing the United States to perform harsh interrogation off our own grounds. Guantanamo Bay is sometimes referred to as a legal black hole. Meaning that in that space, our nation’s laws are not applied. If legal black hole isn’t the term being use, perhaps it’s black site.
