War has a tremendous long lasting effect on a person and the ones that they love. In the short stories The War Prayer and The Snows of Kilimanjaro, the glorification of war takes two different points of view, one from pre-war and the other from post war point of view, with these two works. The Snows of Kilimanjaro is set after the main character returns from war with brief glimpses into some of the traumatic things he had to go through and the affect that it had. The War Prayer talks all about the pre-war glorification that would have gone on in this time period. Both of these points of views are critical in understanding why war should not be glorified in any circumstance.

To glorify a war is not right because after war is when you really see what happens to the soldiers that went and died for our freedom, it is not until the damage is done that people realize how awful war is. On the other hand if we look at how people interpret war before the loved ones leave many people have completely different feelings and that is to glorify war to boost the spirits of the soldiers to be in hopes of their safe return home. For example, “the drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the bunched fire-crackers hissing and sputtering; on every hand and far down the receding and fading spread of roofs and balconies a fluttering wilderness of flags flashed in the sun” (Twain 334). The beginning of The War Prayer is exploding with patriotism trying to rally the men with positive thoughts and wishes. For example “The country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism” (Twain 334). But does this make the glorification of war ok? I do not think so because while it is good to build confidence, there is a fine line between building confidence and giving false hope to soldiers who have never experienced such tragedies like
