The Watson Family: The Personality Of Kenny

In the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny has a curiosity of why Byron treats people so rudely. Kenny treats people better than Byron by, sharing his lunch with a boy named Rufus and Rufus’ brother, Cody. Another reason Kenny treats people better is, Kenny does not like to see people getting beat up, he just walks away. Also, L.J. (Kenny’s “friend”) started stealing from Kenny but, he kept playing with him.

Curtis’s ideas and use characters are surprisingly very well used and described during the story. In the first pages of the book, the reader already gets hooked to the story and wants to continue on. The reader is always presented with new problems or ideas especially with a character like Bud. The type of writing always keeps the reader attached to the story. Curtis even achieved to put some humor during the story, which made me laugh. His story is very well constructed and logic. I like his choice of characters and the plot in general. I easily read the book and never got confused on his writing. I highly recommend people to read this book. Adults and children can read it even if Christopher Paul Curtis wrote books for kids. In the books 250 pages, it consists of a very good story and interesting characters.

I strongly believe that Kenneth Brown possesses character and moral reputation desired of a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Mr. Brown possesses characteristics that are desired of a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, characteristics such as: humility, honesty, and a desire to serve. Characterization is the process in which the author describes the distinctive nature or features of a particular character. A character is often characterized by their own dialogue, actions, thoughts, appearance, and interpretation by the author or by other characters in the story. Through these methods, an author can really bring their characters to life for the reader. In “My Kid’s Dog,” Ron Hansen uses these methods to bring all his characters to life. He portrays the strained relationship an owner has with his ‘daughter’s’ pet dog, and the difficulties overcoming his hardships. Through methods of characterization, Hansen unveils the friction between the dad and the dog and allows the reader to empathize with them, incorporating humor throughout the story, as well.

One of the things about the book that I personally liked was the characters, some of them were easy to relate to, even if you couldn't you could relate someone you knew with them. For example, David is not one of the main characters from the story but the more you learn about him, the more you realize how ambitious he is, wanted to change his career path almost every week, standing up to Mr. Neck. I think he's one of the things that helped Melinda find her voice.

I, personally, loved the author's writing, although I did not really understand why she structured the book like so. With each chapter changing different perspectives and stories, it was kind of hard to remember which chapter went with another considering the chapters where out of order. With each story, I was a little annoyed that they just suddenly ended at the end of the chapter. It made me want to read more and more trying to find the next chapter that went with that person's story. It was also kind of difficult to connect the stories. Other than that, she did a marvelous job grabbing my attention. I loved the analogies that she included in the stories. For example, on page 216- 217, one of the mothers told her daughter about a turtle that eats her tears and then creates birds that laugh

Will, the protagonist, was very likable as well. However, his character only evolved for me as a result of Harlen’s unconditional and relentless friendship with him. In short, Will’s character would’ve lacked without the likeness of a Harlen Bigbear. The character naming was also very ingenious. The Oldpersons, Prettywomans, baby South Wing, and others were interesting and clever last names that made the notion of identifying with the characters even more interesting and the reading, fun.

Lastly, Cormier’s narration style is what keeps the story on a hook. He gives different perspectives from different characters every other chapter. At the beginning of the novel, Cormier has Ben telling his story. It stops when it gets to the next chapter and switches gears to the hijacking of the bus and perspective of Kate, the bus driver. Each chapter goes back and forth from characters which is an interesting narrative style that keeps

The author uses great use of many annotations littered throughout the story. Hurst used a good plot, conflict, and climax in the sad story. The story stayed consistent with having good annotations all the way through. He used foreshadowing, imagery, figurative language to make the story the best it could be and pleasant to read.
