In today’s American society, lying has become something that we are accustomed to using almost every day without even realizing it. In “The Ways We Lie”, Stephanie Ericsson, screenwriter, advertising copywriter, and writer, elaborates on the act of lying and how it is used by everyone on a daily basis. She comes up with a list of the common, different kinds of lies that we all have told. Furthermore, the text goes in depth about the significance of lying and how it is an essential part of every human’s life. Ericsson’s essay effectively conveys this idea through the use of pathos, logos, ethos, personal examples, rhetorical questions, and analogies which helps the reader better understand the reasoning behind lies and how it affects our …show more content…

When describing these different types of lies, Ericsson uses a lot of logos to appeal to the reader by providing concrete evidence and facts to prove her ideas. For example, when she describes how people ignore the plain facts, Ericsson uses a real-life example stating, “In the 60s, the Catholic Church in Massachusetts began hearing complaints that Father James Porter was sexually molesting children. Rather than relieving him of his duties, the ecclesiastical authorities simply moved him from one parish to another between 1960 and 1967, actually providing him with a fresh supply of unsuspecting families and innocent children to abuse” (Ericsson 162). The new diocese was aware of Porter’s actions but chose to ignore it because they desperately needed priests. He continued to abuse children until he was relieved. Stating facts is a critical part in getting a point across because it makes to essay credible. By giving this example, the audience is able to better understand the type of lying being described. Through this, we understand that ignoring the facts is a lie because it’s “a false action done with the intent to deceive” (Ericsson 162). This lie is a very common one because people are sometimes afraid of the truth, so we pretend that the obvious isn’t so obvious. This kind of lie along with the other ones
