This quote states that you should not give up on your hopes and goals because without them life would be plain and boring. Good morning Ms Wenman and classmates. I strongly believe that this quote written by Langston Hughes is powerful and very effective. The poem Dreams was published in 1926 in the book The Weary Blues. Langston wrote this poem to implement acceptance and freedom for African-Americans. During Langston’s time, racism and discrimination against African-Americans was unpleasantly dreadful. They were treated poorly, unfairly and yet they didn't do anything wrong. This poem emphasises that even though African-Americans may look different, it shouldn’t stop them from achieving their dreams. Life is sometimes stressful. Sometimes it's good as it drives us to …show more content…
Aimless? Purposeless? Life without a dream would affect your everyday life as you would lack determination. You would have nothing to work towards which could make your life tedious and colourless. With no goal, your life would be stuck in a pothole. But when you aim for a goal everyday life keeps moving forward. When you dream, don’t just dream and stop halfway. I know sometimes you get lazy and you don’t want to chase your dream anymore and I know you may have tried multiple times so what's gonna hurt getting back up and trying again. When you don’t succeed that goal, you will feel like a worthless failure. So here I stand urging you to go for the gold. Commit to all your dreams. Because when you give up 1 dream, that's one step back, 2 dreams that’s 2 steps back. Do not let yourself live life going backwards. If you do, you’ll end up at the very beginning and you’ll have to start all over again. Your dream is a marathon. You don’t have to be the first to finish and it doesn’t matter if you come last. All that matters is the journey it took to complete the worthwhile marathon and the feeling of success. Because when you reach the finish line it will all be worth
For example, when my grandmother was young, she used to dream about being surrounded by a loving family. She was an orphan. She often tells me stories about how she would lie awake at night dreaming about just that. Many kids in her orphanage used to tell her that none of them were ever going to have a life like that “Why would we?” they said, “can you not see not even our parents wanted us!” Despite all the harsh words, she kept on dreaming and overcame all her obstacles and has reached her goal. Even though your goals might seem impossible, if you dream big you might get just that.
Langston Hughes was known for his poems of black activity in America since the 1920’s to the 1960’s, which was the time of the Harlem Renaissance. “My writing has been largely concerned with the depicting of Negro life in America.” Throughout Langston’s life he has seen and experienced racism. He used these experiences to give him ideas of things he could write about. Back then white people were the majority in Harlem, but then once the blacks started to come they dispersed. “We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased, we are glad. If they are not, it doesn't matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too.” Langston knew that blacks should express themselves no matter what color they are and not be ashamed of it. Some white people may like that they are expressing themselves, on the other hand, some white people may not accept that the
Those who attain their dream are the go-getters who wake up from this illusion and take an optimistic view towards seeking their dream. We as a people pursuing the dream, must change with it to achieve it. It still remains a reality today
Dreams, the aspiration and goal of everyone. That is why everyone is wasting their lives. Throughout this unit, we have looked at examples from both sides of this argument and in the end, it was obvious, it is not worth it to dream. While you can achieve your dream despite immense odds, it's not worth it to dream because if you blindly follow a dream you can't accomplish you can waste your life. Circumstances beyond your control can derail your dream and even if you work hard it doesn't always pay off consequently.
All in all, do not give up dream before we put our effort in it since nurture is more important than nature.
The short but inspirational poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes addresses what happens to aspirations that are postponed or lost. The brief, mind provoking questions posed throughout the poem allow the readers to reflect--on the effects of delaying our dreams. In addition, the questions give indications about Hughes' views on deferred dreams.
Jazz music is often associated with long, lazy melodies and ornate rhythmical patterns. The Blues, a type of jazz, also follows this similar style. Langston Hughes' poem, "The Weary Blues," is no exception. The sound qualities that make up Hughes' work are intricate, yet quite apparent. Hughes' use of consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia, and rhyme in "The Weary Blues" gives the poem a deep feeling of sorrow while, at the same time, allows the reader to feel as if he or she is actually listening to the blues sung by the poem's character.
I believe that we all have a dream and everyone’s dream is different, dreams change with the time just like we do, we had a different dream when we were kids and we have other dreams when we grow up, but there’s only few people who actually have the same dream since childhood. Having the dream it’s easy, following it, it’s really hard! There 's always a lot of obstacles that make people quit from their dream, or in simple way they don 't have enough courage to continue. A very few of them who decide to continue no matter what, they usually get what they want!
Having no definite goal in your life is like traveling without any destination in your mind—meaningless. Having a big happy family, circle of true friends, prominent jobs, huge houses, expensive cars, fancy dresses, plenty of jewelries and wealth or even in small things such as hair goals, body goals and other ambitions are part of our human existence. Our dreams drive us to do what we must do, teach us patience and perseverance, influence our decisions, and even make us a better version of our own selves.
In Langston Hughes’ Harlem Renaissance poem “The Weary Blues,” a man remembers the night he heard a soulful blues player in the streets of Harlem. In the first five lines, Langston depicts a beautiful night with passionate music in the air. The speaker is recalling the night he was “down on Lenox Avenue” and heard a “Negro play[ing]” (5, 6). In the poem Hughes “recaptures the […] experience” to demonstrate “the power of blues” on the speaker and the blues player himself (Bouchard). Beginning in line 13, Hughes illustrates the movement of the man.
That response reminded me of the saying: “Life is about using the whole box of crayons”. We are all complex individuals with a barrage of talents, skills and interests, we should always strive to use those different things to make our dreams come true, all of our different dreams. And as cliché as it may sound, sometimes the path to our main goal isn’t as straightforward as we’ve planned it in our heads, but we have to persevere and dust ourselves off after
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. established a competitive advantage in providing consumer goods at lower prices than competitors in the discount retailing industry. Wal-Mart’s adoption of a cost leadership strategy attracted price sensitive customers to purchase the lowest priced goods in the market. In order to buy in volume at attractive prices, the company built their own warehouse to store an extensive range of products upholding Wal-Mart’s sustainable competitive advantage. This allowed the cost of goods sold amount to three-quarters of discounting revenues, reducing its cost of operations in exchange for larger market share and higher profits (HBS, 3). The strategy attracted masses of consumers providing a no frill service by achieving higher economies of scale at the same time maximizing sales volume and inventory turnover, while minimizing expenses. Wal-Mart gained a sustainable competitive advantage in their ability to keep prices lower than competitors because of their accumulated lower cost per unit fixed costs allowing the store to benefit from the economies of scale.
Even though I have been to Ethiopia few times I was really little, So I never realized what I was actually experiencing. the first few times I have been there I remember the Rainy mornings and nights the muddy grounds and the crazy thunderstorms which you can here so loudly like rocks hitting the tin roof. I remember walking to get everywhere, eating Ethiopian food and buying things from stores and sellers on the streets. At the time of the trip, I took when I was little It did not Really seem like much of America was different from Ethiopia. I always thought no matter where you go that life was a breeze. That you could wake up go to school or work come back to your family and have a nice day but clearly, that was not the case for everybody
It is no surprise that this poem is written by an African American, specifically Hughes, who was born on February 1, 1902. His father left the family for Mexico when he was young to escape from the prominent racism in the states. The early 20th century was certainly not a kind era to the blacks. Until the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum in the mid 1900s, African Americans would be subject to segregation, disenfranchisement and exploitation. In fact, the notion of white supremacy essentially rendered African Americans as an inferior race, generating a lot of prejudice and preconceptions.
Every single person on Earth has their own distinct personality backed up by their behavior. But, how much is our personality is affected by the environment surrounding us? This debate has existed since 1869, when the phrase "Nature Versus Nurture" was created the English polymath, Francis Galton. On one side, there are those who argued that our personalities and traits are determined by our genetic model and DNA. On the opposite spectrum are the people agreeing with the nurture side of the debate, which argues that people are born with a mind as a “blank state”, where through learning and interactions with the surrounding environment, we gain an understanding of life.
