The Western Front By Stephen Crane: Character Analysis

Decent Essays
Three characters who names describe their personalities are the youth (Henry), the tall soldier (Jim), and the loud soldier (Wilson). The youth describes Henry so much. Before the war he was young and cocky, believing that war was like a romance when “He had, of course, dreamed of battles all his life- of vague and bloody conflicts that had thrilled him with their sweep and fire”(Crane 7), but these young childish dreams soon get crushed when he sees the horrors of the war and runs from it in fear. “So came to pass that as he trudged from the place of blood and wrath his soul changed” (Crane 245). The war changes this naive youth into a strong, courageous young man. The tall soldier fits Jim so well because Jim has a large impact on Henry.
