In class, we watched a video documentary based off of the real experiences of all the hero’s in the Syrian war from when it started in 2011 until present time. This video documentary can be referred to as the White Helmets. The White Helmets were a group of Syrian people who were in the war and had to dig people out from under the rubble and deal with the phone calls from their loved ones asking if there alive and alright when they didn’t even know where they were or if they were still alive under all the rubble from the many bombs and other various attacks. Babies and young children, innocent victims, it was just sad. Doing this was very scary and dangerous; you never know when another bomb or grenade will fall right next to you and kill another
The Holocaust is, if not, one of the largest and most important events of European academic history. This event was the systematic killing of Jews by the Nazi regime from 1933-1945. The Holocaust was based on the idea to create a “perfect race”. The perfect race involved eliminating anyone who was considered a threat to the Nazi Party. This included: the Jews, Gypsies, handicapped, the mentally ill, and anyone with an “imperfection”. Today there are various representations available, which adequately convey thoughts, opinions and information about the Holocaust. And with such a variety of resources, it poses the question, about which, is the best representation available to understanding this tragic event. While it’s hard to determine what
It would seem there would be some exceptions which would have been considered out of bounds, well, not really though. The 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan is an educational and historical institution honoring the victims and examining 9/11 and its continued global significance.
The soldiers have constantly experienced their friends being killed right in front of them with the most gruesome death. The soldiers being shot by a machine gun.
Description of Life in the Trenches You might be thinking that life in trenches was non-stop death, violence, and pain. But have you ever thought about why? Or what do soldiers do in their trenches when they're not fighting or dying? Do you always trust sources when you read them? Do you always believe what they say on television documentaries?
In a few words, these soldiers could be described as “brave, but woefully undertrained”. Despite their lack of training, most of these
The video explains the effects that the United States and its policies had and have on the Native people of the America's. The killing of the Native Americans as stated by Charles Abourezk in the video could be called genocidal. I think it is improtnant to understand the effect that these genorcial practicies still have on both the United States government and Native Americans today. I think this shows how people have forgotten the debt we owe to the native peoples of this contienent. I think this is important because it shows the inhumane treatment, broken promises, and pain endured by the native people. In addition, I find it interesting we celebrate Columbus Day as a Ferdral holiday. Christopher Colubus decimated the native population, began
According to Sociologist Craig Calhoun, socialization is “the process through which individuals internalize the values, beliefs, and norms of a society and learn to function as its members”(Calhoun, 2013). With that in mind, media, particularly the music video and advertisement industry, are essential parts of contemporary socialization, especially involving the perpetuation of gender roles in our culture. At a very young age, children learn, without difficulty, the differences between boys and girls, and what standards they are held to. Women are often objectified, systematically demoralized, and dehumanized in the music video industry and mainstream advertisement. External forces, such as the media, not only guide children to understand the norms of each gender, but these forces also shape children and adolescent’s perception of the self. The documentaries Killing Us Softly 4 directed by Jean Kilbourne and Dream World 3 directed by Sut Jhally explore the distorted and fallacious ideals of femininity and sexuality expressed in contemporary media.
Many people don’t comprehend how traumatic the life of a young fighter in World War I was. In my opinion, this book will especially help you understand this. The descriptive language describing the wounds and unpleasant content made me feel queasy at times, but also forced me to feel compassionate for the military troops. In this book, limbs are lost, animals such as horses are killed, starving soldiers dig through garbage for food, the troops are destroyed by poison gas, munitions, and bombs. The conditions the fighters went through in the war was dangerous and disturbing which makes me realize how fortunate my life is and causes me to feel compassion for the fighters because of what they had to struggle with.
There is no doubt that when war occurs, every single human being is affected by it even if it is just a little. In the novel, “All Quiet on the Western Front” written by Erich Maria Remarque, a group of teenage men, who also appear to by classmates, are in the German army of World War I because they have chosen to leave their adolescence at home and school for grown up work at the army. Throughout this fictional novel, they face many challenges that result in them not seeing each other ever again because of death. War affects individuals by leaving behind necessities such as education or jobs, not being able to watch over others such as their health, and injuries that soldiers receive while they are at war.
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you all, but I do hope you all are well. It has been a rough three months since I've joined the other nurses in aiding this war and needless to say I have settled in and adapted to the conditions. Since the beginning, nothing has changed within these 3 months, neither side had gotten much advantage of the war. It would be as if a back and forward tug of war between the two sides. Everyday I watch from the tent as hundreds of men rot away in the horrid conditions of the trenches. Many were brought in but many doesn't mean all. After barely being treated and having about a week of recovery soldiers were sent back to suffer in the battlefield. A few weeks ago a huge storm crossed the battlefield. The trenches
Throughout human history, we have watched many men and women storm into combat to sweat, bleed, and die for a cause that they believe in. War is no secret to mankind, we have seen it hundreds of times, and we are aware of the mental and physical damage it has the capability of causing. We’ve learned of the gruesome damage caused by the first world war, and the numerous amount of lives it claimed. We’ve read the vivid stories authors wrote, using literature as a means to communicate the horrors experienced in war. Even in present day, we’ve seen, or known veterans who have returned from war with mental damage due to the terrible things they witnessed or partook in. Whether or not it is the smartest or most responsible idea, the human race uses
We all sleep and rest and eat in the trenches, but it’s not paradise. One night, the sound of loud booms woke us up. We were being attacked by some very dangerous artillery. We could feel every boom and every crack in the dirt above us. Many soldiers were not prepared for this and got sick. The attack come out of nowhere and frightened all of us.
In a country full of death and devastation, it is easy to lose hope. Although this may be true, to some civilians, hope is the only thing they have. Thanks to a group of volunteers, hope can become more then a dream, but instead a reality. In Syria, bombs and riots have taken over because of a civil war. Ordinary civilians have congregated to save the sinless people who are caught in the middle of the fire. They train, fight, and most of all remorse, on a day to day basis to save a stranger. They wake up every morning, buckle their boots, strap their helmets, and set out to do what they believe is their humanitarian duty. These men call themselves the White Helmets.

Jesley Camara Dominic Biondi ENG 101F 8 January 2017 The White Helmets The movie ‘’The White Helmets’’ by Khaled Khatib is a documentary about people who volunteer to rescue civilian people in Syria. My interpretation of the film is that the white helmets are like heroes to Syrian people because they think of them first before themselves. Whenever there are bombs dropping, the white helmets rush in to pull people out of the rubble. They do not care how dangerous their jobs are, as long as the people they are helping are safe and alive.
